Actors' Shakespeare Project's 15th Season Continues with NAT TURNER IN JERUSALEM

By:

Actors' Shakespeare Project's 15th Season continues with Nat Turner in Jerusalem, performed at Hibernian Hall in Roxbury. Performances January 30 - February 24 (Press Performance: Saturday, February 2, 8:00 PM, Hibernian Hall, 184 Dudley St, Boston). For more information visit actorsshakespeareproject.org.

Nat Turner led a slave revolt that shocked the country in August of 1831. The evening before Turner is scheduled to be executed, he and attorney Thomas R. Gray, the recorder of his confessions, confront what has passed and what the future may hold. Full of rich imagery, this politically timely story explores morality, freedom, spirituality, and one man's fiercely held convictions.

Benny Sato Ambush, award-winning freelance theatre artist and Emerson Stage's Former Senior Distinguished Producing Director-In-Residence, directs. "I am delighted to be directing for ASP for the first time; it's been a long time in the making. Nat Turner is a play for our times; a perfect example of how an event of the past can illuminate our present moment. It raises the perennial question that humans never seem able to answer: how to treat one another. The chess match between a captured Nat Turner, his interrogating lawyer who wrote down his confessions, and his jailer, highlights, to use Rev. Martin Luther King's words, the 'inescapable mutuality' between blacks and whites in America specifically, and between all humanity in a larger sense."

Brandon Green* plays Nat Turner and Lewis D. Wheeler* plays Thomas Gray and the prison guard. Both are members of Actors' Equity Association.

The design and production team includes Janie Howland** (Scenic), Aja M. Jackson (Lighting), A.W. Nadine Grant (Costumes), Dewey Dellay (Sound), and Sam Layco* (Stage Manager).
