He'd need to pull something like that to get people to watch-- this year's Oscars don't look too exciting. The biggest deal is whether Heath Ledger will win Best Supporting Actor.

EDIT: And... apparently I made a double post...

I'm not THAT excited.

Why, he's the Nick Adams of Hollywood!

And Schmerg, Heath Ledger is the closest thing we have to a "lock" in any category. It's pretty obvious he'll win...Kate Winslet and Slumdog Millionaire are pretty close to a lock, as well. The real suspense is in Director, Actor, and Supporting Actress.

I know the Academy isn't supposed to worry about ratings while voting, but "The Dark Knight" and "WALL-E" were also definitely among the top 5 films of the year (over the mediocre "The Reader" any day) and snubbing them is not just an affront to the public, but reinforcement of the stereotype that the Academy is a smoke-filled room full of old fogies who would rather vote for a teary Holocaust drama where Kate Winslet shows her tits or an optimistic "Bollywood" film that's made by Brits and makes life in Mumbai seem like a rags-to-riches fairy tale than two beautifully crafted movies that changed the pop culture landscape (albeit temporarily) and transcended their own genres. Is there really any doubt that WALL-E will win Best Animated Feature???

If WALL-E wins, it would be the 4th win for Pixar (Finding Nemo, The Incredible, and Ratatouille are the others), and the 5th for Disney (the three Pixar films, plus Spirited Away are the others). This year will be the 8th time the award is given out, which would mean a rate of 50% for Pixar films and over 50% for Disney films.

Again, this is all predicated on WALL-E winning, but I don't really see Kung Fu Panda or Bolt giveing it much of a challenge.

*Sigh* If only . . .

But he also mentioned that singing and dancing will be part of it, and I sure hope he's serious about that!

"The real suspense is in Director, Actor, and Supporting Actress."

You could be right about Director and Supporting Actress but I, personally, feel that Sean Penn is pretty much a lock for the award. Mickey Rourke could sneak in and steal it if people feel schamltzy about his comeback. But I'm not 100% sure the academy will forget his past. It's so political. But I think it ought to go to Penn.

I didn't forget him and I'm not discounting the great work he's done. I just feel the race is really between Penn and Rourke. The SAGs are usually a good indicator on who will win the Oscar. Penn won the SAG. Rourke won the Golden Globe which used to be an indicator on who will win the Oscar but the Foreign Press is a little more "free thinking" than the Academy and was willing to over look his checkered past. It'll certainly be interesting to see what happens.

The fifth for Disney in "Best Animated Feature," he meant. Just that category alone, not the other 56786 awards!

I remember the days when the the award for "Best Original Song" always went to Disney.

Sigh, me, too. I was still shocked when one of the bajillion "Enchanted" didn't win last year. I miss the 'old' Disney, though-- so much that I love The Little Mermaid on Broadway, so you know I'm a bit desperate!

I think the animated category is a joke - if the movie is good enough, it should go against any other one!

I agree. So often, it's one exemplary movie up against complete trash- completely undercutting the win.

I agree with blaxx. The reason why there's a separate category is that people are too snobby to acknowledge when Disney or Pixar actually makes a really good film. They can't bear to reward fun, kid-oriented, mainstream films.

I think WALL-E should have been nominated for Best Picture, as it is one of the 5 best films of the year, IMO.

Just to clarify, I did mean in the Best Animated Feature category, not overall.

Has an animated feature ever, in the Oscar history, been awarded for Best Picture??

I recall the Animated Feature Oscar being rather new... like from the 80's ? Am I wrong?

The Animated Feature category was established in 2002, I believe.
The only animated feature ever to be nominated for Best Picture was Beauty and the Beast in '92. Animated films have been nominated in numerous other categories over the years, such as screenplay and the sound categories.

And sorry to derail the thread (even more than it already was) but WHY isn't there a Pixar musical in production yet?

Beauty and the Beast was the only animated film ever nominated for Best Picture - it lost to Silence of the Lambs. It did, however, win the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy).

The Best Animated Feature category is only around ten years old. In fact, I think Shrek was the first film to win the award.

Animated Feature has only been around since 2001. This will be the 8th year the award is given out.

Past winners are:
2001-Shrek
2002- Spirited Away
2003- Finding Nemo
2004- The Incredibles
2005- Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit
2006- Happy Feet
2007- Ratatouille
2008- ?? (but probably Wall-E)

Has an animated feature ever, in the Oscar history, been awarded for Best Picture??
No, and only one, Beauty and the Beast, has ever been nominated.

The Academy treats animated films like second-rate films. It's really a shame, considering there were some truly astounding pieces of animation in the last decade. Some that were arguably better than the Best Picture winners.

Oh come on, the Oscars are going to rock, provided that they have a big dance number with "Jai ho."
