The concept recording of 'Jesus Christ Superstar.'
I was in 3rd grade and thought 'King Herod's Song' was really funny. This would have been 1981'ish.

*thinks* Y'know, I can't recall THE VERY FIRST album I received, but I FONDLY recall memories of 10 yr. old me lipsynching to Alan Cummings' 'Emcee' for family and friends, and then, having my little sister mouth the lyrics to "So What?" -- Good times thanks to the good folks behind the '98 CABARET Revival!

Posted: 3/21/08 at 11:18pmI know the movie soundtrack to "Chicago" was what really got me into musical theatre, but I'm not sure if the first Broadway cast album I bought was "Titanic" or the OBC of "Chicago." I'm gonna guess it was the OBC of "Chicago," only because it was that movie/show that gave my love of musical theatre the spark it needed (as a side note, I hated that recording for the longest time. It was only after I started listening to more Broadway cast albums that my ear got used to the Broadway voices and I was able to appreciate that recording for how awesome it really is). I've got way to many recordings now (vinyl, cassette, CD, and digital) to remember which one really was first.

The Wiz, on a good old fashioned record album, which I bought right after we got back from our NYC trip that year.
My parents already had the OBC's for West Side Story and Oklahoma! (hey, they really didn't buy a lot of albums)

The first cast album I ever purchased was Grease. I got it in 1978 and I was 10 years old.
A couple of years later, I came home and my father met me at the door. He immeadiately went into some damage control. Apparently, my brother had got the record out to play (FROM MY ROOM) and broke it! My father actually had to hold me back from beating the holy hell out of my brother!
Oddly enough, it was the only time that my brother ever apologized that I actually believed he was sorry. He's in the Army now, but I don't think that he has ever been more afraid for his life than what the family now refers to as the "Grease" incident.

My nana gave me The Lion King OBC when I was about 10, I listened to it a bit but didn't really get into it, and still haven't. It wasn't until my mum bought me Les Mis OLC a few years later that I fell in love with Musical Theatre,
The first cast recording I bought myself was the Complete Symphonic Recording of Les Mis, which at £30 was my pocket money for the month away.

Posted: 3/22/08 at 2:53pmThat would be Miss Saigon. I remember seeing Lea Salonga on the Oscars(not knowing who she was) singing A Whole New World and that one performance got me into musical theatre. It's been a nonstop ride since then.

The first one that was actually mine was Annie Get Your Gun with Bernadette.

My parents gave me the OBC of Annie for Christmas when I was like... 6 or 7. Not long after that, my parents gave me the recording of Kiss of the Spider Woman. My mother realized what it was about and took it away from me before I had a chance to listen to it

First, I tape recorded the entire The Sound of Music video tapes so I could listen to it every day. I was given West Side Story and Jesus Christ Superstar on records when I was 10. I bought the movie soundtrack of Hello Dolly when I was 16, and the first cast albums I bought for myself were Annie Get Your Gun with Bernadette and OBC of Funny Girl. (By the way, for anyone that wonders, I'm 24 years old now, but I loved the "older" stuff)

Posted: 3/23/08 at 2:51amI can't remember what my very first album was, but I do remember lisening to the concept Jesus Christ Superstar a lot when I was younger and just starting to get into musicals, even though I got the American Evita right around the same time.
