I really don't know ! I think it will be bigger worldwide, but I don't know how it will be received in the US.

Your thoughts ?

It will have a big fan base like Hairspray did:

-the musicals
-Meryl Streep/Michelle Pfeiffer*
-Pierce Brosnan/John Travolta*
-the music

*And I am not saying that Meryl compares to Michelle or Pierce to John.

Not domestically, but I feel it will do much better overseas.

Mamma Mia and Abba are huge around the world

But has anyone digested the inevitable horror that is "High School Musical 3" being the biggest selling movie musical of all time domestically and internationally... not to mention up for Golden Globes, Oscars and Grammys.

If it tops Grease, Chicago, or Hairspray, is it considered to be a top movie musical or...?

Yes. That is what I mean.

HSM3 will out sell any movie musical in history.

I like it and all... but no other movie musical in this WORLD can top any of those three!! It's weird to even imagine it. Do you think this is the reason Disney decided to put this movie in theatres... or as a good way to end the series... or both?!

I'm pretty sure HSM3 and Oscar won't get along too well, don't worry.

It "got along" with 'The Little Mermaid'. What is the difference between them?

well, with an entire score of eligible songs, I am sure one will get a nom.

I guess so. But if Enchanted can get three noms and HSM3 could get some, why couldn't Hairspray?! Was it because it was a remake?

The Little Mermaid is in a totally different league than High School Musical 3. Not that I've seen it (HSM3) yet, but assuming it is in the style of its predecessors the two can not be compared.

I'm not too familiar with Hairspray but I don't think it was eligible for any Oscars because the songs weren't written specifically for the movie. It wasn't an original score (much like Sweeney wasn't nominated for any songs because sondheim didn't write anything new for the film). I don't know if they added anything for the hairspray movie that wasn't in the stage version or not.

I think MAMMA MIA! will be bigger globally, while HAIRSPRAY was bigger domestically.

I'm with zooxanthellae...eek.

Since you're obviously someone who loves "The Little Mermaid", I shouldn't have a problem explaining the difference.

"The Little Mermaid" (the film) is a terrific musical.

The third installment of the "High School Musical" franchise will likely be...less than brilliant.

That's why.

Marketing needs to highlight Sophie and Sky if it wants a youthful audience (the summertime repeat-customers).

This will be a baby boomer hit though. It all depends on marketing.

I think a lot of people, young and old, will come out to see this. I mean look at the stage musical. Abba, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan will bring out the "Older" folks(and by older, I don't actually mean that old), but I agree if they can market it to bring in a large amount of the younger crowd (and not just the kids who will see it because they love Abba or their parents do) it has the potential to be extremely successful.

We shall see.

Honestly I was suprised how well Hairspray did.

The genre is sort of unpredictable.
