Well if you're going to be here in NYC that week there are a few other things you could go to. On August 18th, Stew and Heidi are participating in a panel discussion at the Walter Reade Theater and the next day they are playing in the Lincoln Center Out of Doors concert series.

Check out www.stewsongs.com for the details.

BUMP

It's an exciting week for us Scaryotypes. Tomorrow night Stew and Heidi Present The Broadway Problem at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park at 7PM.

Passing Strange The Movie begins at the IFC on Friday. I'll be there Friday at 6:15. Spike Lee, Stew and Heidi will be at the 6:15 and 9:20 screenings, and Stew and Heidi will be there at the same times on Saturday.

Hey thanks robbie_731, they clips are aweeeeeeesome. They were pretty generous with them, length wise.

That first clip though..Arlington Hill, one of the best parts of the show..I got goosebumps. I almost forgot how amazing Coleman Domingo was. Holy SH*T I can not wait.

Yes, Robbie, thanks for that! The clips are indeed very long. You can see how brilliantly written (and funny) PASSING STRANGE is.

It also reminds me of how much I wanted to kick in my TV when PASSING STRANGE was repeatedly robbed at the Tonys.

I'm praying it gets extended...I won't be in town during its scheduled IFC run (puts head on keyboard, whimpers).

But I'll be at Damrosch Park tonight!!! (raises head, big grin) The Official Passing Strange Love Thread! -- Lincoln Center Out of Doors

I'm in the same situation, won't be in town for the film this weekend, but will be there tonight also. And for what it's worth, when I talked with Heidi last week at the Asphalt Orchestra event, she seemed optimistic that the film's run will be extended at the IFC. If so, I'll definitely be there the day after I return.

Rock Show at the Belasco...um, IFC theater!

Out of Doors was great last night --- my 6 yr old nephew even rocked out to 45 minutes of Inuit throat singing....surprisingly not the same as Mongolian throat singing....but I digress.

The Broadway Problem was about a 75min mash-up of Broadway tunes re conceived into every genre -- pop, psychedelic, reggae, "soul train", Brecht.....the kind of mash-ups only Stew and Heidi create.

Among the best --

"This Joint is Jumpin'" -- in reggae
"Everything's Coming up Roses" -- in full on Soul Train mode
"Edelweiss" -- with no embellishment whatsoever.

Who knew that the line from PS --- "Onward Christian Soliders...as a rhumba!?!?" would be so telling.

Thanks for posting that YoungSally. Forgive me for repeating your list a bit. Stew Nation Under A Groove!

Conservatives would blanch in horror, but it was one of the best concerts I've heard this year. Dazzling jazz-funk mashups from (among other things) PORGY & BESS ("Summertime/It Aint Necessalary So/with snatches of "Bess, You Is My Woman Now"], HAIR/THE FULL MONTY [A hot "Black Boys" mixed with "Big Black Man", the former done as a poetry slam] "America" from WEST SIDE STORY mixed PROMISES,PROMISES. "The Joint Is Jumpin" was re-invented as a Reggae jam, and "Summertime" in the PORGY & BESS mashup was spiced by a bit of Sly and the Family Stone's "Hot Fun In The Summertime"! The funk was flamin' with Fats Waller's "Honeysuckle Rose" featured parts of "Too Darn Hot", and Duke Ellingtons "It Don't Mean A Thing" was turned into a sexy trance groove with parts of Stevie Wonder's "Too High"! Not all the numbers were mashups: Stu sang a ravishingly tender version of "Edelweiss" ever, ditto a soulful "Nobody" a classic Bert Williams song from 1905. And like you noted, the show was capped by a deep-down and discofied Funkadelic version of "Everythings Coming Up Roses" that was pure Ice Palace, c. 1978. I was bounching in my seat the entire time, but I during that I couldn't resist getting up and shakin' my groove thang.

I pray Stew & Heidi do this show again. I'm thirsting for a CD of this!

The concert sounds like it was amazing! Oh how I wish I lived in the city... and I am also praying that Stew and Heidi might do the show again (prefereably at a time I can see it). I am espeically intrigued by the Black Boys/Big Black Man mix. Sounds pretty genius to me!

On another note, I am really hoping to make it to the movie this weekend at IFC (especially if I can get to one of the Saturday filmings that Stew and Heidi are scheduled to attend). Fingers crossed!

"Black Boys/Big Black Man" was a favorite of Stews, who commented "I like that a lot. It's a nice tribute to black men"

Greetings, Scaryotypes! I miss the (original group!) Well. I'm really, really sad that I won't be able to see the flick (due to a back prob). Ah, well..I shall pray that it comes out on DVD some day. Is there any way anyone can burn a DVD from the VOD? My stinking cable co., RCN is not showing the flick on the 26th. What a bummer.
Have a blast, everyone that's going!!!!

It's in DC with a different cast?? How interesting!! Wonder why it's not being covered by theatre press.

Which theater is doing it?

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
