Yeah. I mean, I do think his friends mean well. Their well-meaning may backfire, but I don't think they're just like, "oh, well, we can't find him, we'll just go get a new friend!" I think it's evident in their constant advice that they want what's best for him. They often don't know what that is, or how to accurately help him achieve it, but I don't think that would lead them to give up on him. In the end, he makes it clear that what he needs is space to figure things out for himself.

I know it's supposed to be ambiguous but in a way I feel his friends are privy to his "Being Alive" (even though imo the song is part of Bobby's imagination) at least in the sense that they realize that there has been an emotional breakthrough; that Bobby is ready to move on, to give it a try. As Bobby remembers it, his friends have always encouraged him to 'try love' and now that he's ready, they too know that his happiness (i.e. his surprise birthday party) is no longer dependent on them.

Oh didn't mean to say I didn't know that Bobby was gay, but that Raul Esparza the actor was openly gay.

I think his friends do witness a change beginning to brew; and I think that's part of the reason the show is structured the way it is. No, you can't trace a clear developmental arc through the book scenes, but there is some movement toward a breakthrough. And obviously that's why Joanne is last. Because she breaks him. But while I do think it's fair to say that his friends see the beginnings of something in his behavior over time, I don't think Being Alive is meant to be a summation of things that happen over a period of time that we're just not shown. I think it is actually that particular moment of realization, in the real time of the show.
