The movie FAME#1
Posted: 1/19/08 at 12:59pm
I love the film. But the ending number is the most moving musical performance I ever saw on film. It gives me the chills each time (I just watched it again). The spirit, love and talent coming from those kids is overwhelming!

I feel so strongly about it that I had to post, so pardon me~~

p.s. I'm in the film too, lol!

For me it's a toss up between Body Electric from FAME and when Babs walks down the street in her scrubs at the end of NUTS. :)

I worked at a movie theater when that movie came out - and would .
watch it over and over again.

The lunch scene when I was a kid was magical. And the ending - well that always brought me to tears.

It is sad that Gene Anthony Ray already passed.

That's exactly what I thought as he made his grand entrance at the end, YWIW. What a great talent. I loved the early scene when he stole the dance audition from his friend. How sexy was that?

I am not sure if I can remember the line know,

But when he was dancing, and one of the instructors asked what kind of move he was doing, was it Debbi Allen that said "Wicked" or something along that line. I cannot remember it now.

Anne Meara was also great.

Yes, it was something to that effect. Anne Meara was great. I thought this was an excellent film. I can't remember if it was a BO success though.

Even the little, non-flashy scenes in this movie are so dead-on and accurate. I love the scene where Ms. Burke firmly, unsentimentally throws the bubbleheaded Lisa out of the dance program--the essence of "tough love." And Irene Cara's dismissal of her own rehearsal-room performance of "Out Here on my Own" as "sentimental s**t."
I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."

This movie was incredibly successful (and influential) both culturally and at the box office.

"Which one is Jane?"

Not in that scene (shucks!) I'm in the scene when they go to see Rocky Horror. I'm part of the group dressed up. All of us in that scene were the original group that started the practice of acting out the movie in front of the screen! I got a lot of exposure when they show the audience. I'm at the bottom of the screen, in a tuxedo and party hat!

I probably have a book on Rocky Horror history that I bought years and years ago (I started going in the 1980's) with you in it then!

I love the Fame movie and the Rocky Horror part has always been my favorite of the non-musical parts!

Alas, I fear it went with some other books to goodwill when I moved. Though I did fine my Mr. Bill book from when I was a kid - it includes one of those creepy plastic records!

I liked the dance partner who goes off on Leroy. "This was MY audition Leroy." One of the best acting jobs by a minor character.

Wow Jane- didn't know all that stuff about you and that film. Absolutely loved Debbie Allen in this movie! I even watched the TV series based on it. Although the TV show was a little cheesy- the kids were so talented on it! I'll have to look for you the next time it comes on. It was the movie Fame that introduced me to Rocky Horror. Growing up in the conservative south, I had not heard of it before this movie. When I was in college, I saw Rocky dozens of time- props and all. I wish my kids could experience this but Rocky doesn't play anywhere around here. I also remember the Drew Carey episode when Drew and his friends went to see Roky Horror and Mimi and her friends wanted to see Priscilla. Then they had a "dance-off". Great episode. mom

LOL, mom, it wasn't fun at all, though! Alan Parker was a slavedriver! Everyone had to chainsmoke cigarettes in order to keep the entire theater smoke-filled. They kept throwing packs of them at us. One of the Rocky Horror people talked out of turn. Parker humiliated her and made her leave the set. It was a horrible experience but it was my introduction to the business. Got a taste of "fame", lol.
