Well, now that I've made it through that post...

I dont't think Legally Blonde is "too American". Yes there are some American references to pop culture, but it's nothing anyone in another country wouldn't be able to "get".

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Winston that post is erm well, lets stop there

The show is not to American at all, im British and ive seen it and got it (they were plenty of American culture references in the film and that was huge here.

Also you make it sound like it did bad out of town?? did you read the reviews for its SF try-out they were amazing , it didnt really have any negative , so much so very little in the show got changed by the time it hit broadway (where it also got a lot of great reviews)

I was in Frisco when the show opened but didnt have an evening free to see it. The reviews were just fantastic and they didnt expect them to be anywhere near what they were. If it comes to London it will proberbly do very well. The Novello's free!

Although I was a bit skeptical about Legally Blonde as a musical but after watching it by certain means I think it is a wonderful show which will appeal to people who have seen the film and newcomers if and when it comes to London. I think The Dominion would be the perfect venue for LB though WWRY would have to close first which isn't going to happen for ages.

Besides finding your post a tad offensive,(sorry, but I'm American)it is true that there are American shows that simply don't translate.. just look at what they did to Avenue Q to make it "accesible for British audiences"...look at Rent.....
At the end of the day, we are different countries with different pop culture history, so jokes and story lines, references that make sense to "Americans" will be lost on ANY foreign audience etc...
I think Legally Blonde, however, is a bad musical idea no matter what country it is being produced in. I long for the days of yore when we were actually being innovative in theater, rather than combing IMDB for any film that might be a lucrative musical production.

Ranarand, I am sorry if I offended you it wasn't my intentiion.

The point I was trying to make in my post was this. American shows do not translate well. I watched a roundtable dicussion on a west end show on youtube when Q was comming over. It was carrieda cross the pond by the reiveiws and the word of mout that said that it was pretty out there and raunchy ect. The people that were involed with the roundtable idscussion were talking about how this isn't as offenisve as Americans make it out obe and iti isn't that out there or for lack of a beter term wild.

I do think that a common problem at least for american shows going to London is this. That if the show gets reviewd as crude raunchy and out there ect. It's not going to appear that way in London. I do think that this is to be true for Spring Awakening when it makes its way over there at some point. That the whole notion that the proudcers seem to have that a show is goingg to be recieved the same way in london that it did in the states is just stupid. And as Ranarand said, we are two different coutnries with two diferent pop couldters and a different sense of humor. Despite the fat that American TV shows are shown in England ad nausum diesn't mean that there are things that can not translate.

Simple Fact-Legally Blonde Movie was made as a worldwide commercial movie and did very well worldwide

Legally Blonde musical really isn't that different from the film so will appeal worldwide as the film did (why is this so hard to understand)

Also London is always PACKED with broadway transfers so its not like a Taboo thing

Oh and when Spring Awakening comes over here it wont have the same impact as it has on broadway (shock wise) as the brits tend to be a lot less shockable than our american Friends

I love Lawrence O'Keefe

I hated the film of Legally Blonde

What to do?

(And I agree with Weez and others - there is almost no such thing as a show being 'too American' in tone as we're exposed to their TV, films, books etc on a daily basis. What does matter is marketing (or lack of - c.f. Drowsy) and/or plugging a gap in the market (c.f. Avenue Q) that marks the show as something different. And bunging a load of pop songs into a contrived plot willy-nilly.)

I was only embarrassed at the "too American" comment because I happen to think the show is so staggeringly dumb and poorly constructed...that's all. I wasn't even going there with the culture question.

The OBCR is being released today in the US. Does anyone know when it will be available to buy in the UK?

Why, hello Margaret! Yes darling, half past five. Well, everyone, simply le tout Park Avenue and la creme de Hyannis! Well, the press table's going to be awfully crowded... but if you don't mind sharing a folding chair with Harper's Bazaar... Sing? Me? Heavens no, it's Edie's day, not mine... Although people can be so insistent, and I hate to disappoint. Twist my arm, blackmail me, threaten my very life, and who knows? You might get a verse of something...

Grr my cd was due tomorrow but its been put back until the 20th so i just got it of Itunes

Great cast recording was really impressed

I started to listen to it on my laptop and thought urgh it sounds bland, but after i burnt in to CD and put it on my surround sound player it sounded awesome.

Everyone has been saying that the music etc sounds weak but listening to it blasting through my speakers it sounded great(even my partner was impressed and he hates musicals lol)

The cast sound spot on (LBB sounds a little pithy in a few places but nothing major, nothing what warrants the nasty snarly remarks about her).

Orfeh and Christian sound great as does Michael and the Greek Chorus.

Stand out songs for me are Ohmigod (what a great recording of this ridiculously catchy song,The writers of this song were bloody clever knowing damn well this song would be stuck in your head for ever)

What You Want (the energy comes through on the recording , shame the cut so much out of it though)

Blood In The Water (brilliantly recorded with him sounding fantastic, and i normally hate this song)

Ireland(so glad she has an ending to the song now, how much does the Celtic Moods line make me laugh hehe)

So Much Better( people can say what they want about this show but this is one hell of a song and finishes act 1 off really well, the build in the song is fantastic , bundy is a little strained but all in all very good)

Whipped in to Shape (brilliant , my partner loved this)

There Right There( i LOVE this , its such a funny song and the cast sound wicked)

Legally Blonde(WOW , bundy sounded great here , a lot better than she did when i watched her perform this , the song is also beautiful and i love the orchestrations in this song)

Legally Blonde Remix( i was thinking this recording wouldn't be great as the song is very visual but it surprised me.)

Was not impressed with Serious at all, i don't know what it is it just sounds flat, i think with the dialog missing as well it kinda flat lines.I also did not like Bundy's Voice on this song.

And Positive is just an awful song, it seems like its all over the place with no where to go.Why the hell did they drop Love and War ?? that song was great.

Harvard Variations , Serious reprise etc are all fine as well

All in all its a great recording but DON'T listen to it on your Laptops etc as everything sounds so diluted , put it on a great system where you can here everything.

The thing is that when I said it was too american this is what I ment. I ment that there are a lot of american shows that people will think will do great in the UK but end up doing grat on broadway but aweful on the west end stage. I get the impression that this show is the kind of show that is going to do well on broadway but I am not sure how well it will fair over in London.

And, I recall that when Idina Menzel signed up for the west end cast of Wicked, many people over there really didn't know who she was. And, the awe factor that the proudcers were going for of having the tony winning star who originated the role to come to the west end. Well, let's just say that the awe factor that the producers were looking for wasn't to be found.

I do think that becuase of this that Laura Bell Bundy will go to London. Keep in mind, that her contract on broadway is up in febuary around the time that the original poster said that they are going to open up in London.

ok so IF the show does open here, and Laura Bell Bundy DIDNT come with...who would we like???? My vote is Emma Williams! she could really lend her voice to it, and would deff look the part! After seeing her in Bat Boy (she played a totaly American teenage girl in this for those who saddly missed out) all those many moons ago, I think should would be fab for this!
