This is one of my favorite musicals, and of course, one of my favorite scores. I came upon a few of the songs randomly and fell head-over-heels in love with it. I really hope the London revival transfers to NYC soon.
A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.
lucky enough to see the show twice in London- it was my first time ever seeing/hearing the show and I was beyond amazed. The whole relationship between George and Dot was so powerful, and Move On always brought tears to my eyes but I could never figure out why. Such a beautiful and powerful show.

I read a synopsis online because I know nothing of the show other than it's Seurat. It jumped around a lot and I had a difficult time following it. I'm sure it's much clearer when seen (whether on stage or screen).
I love shows where you think, "how the hell are they going to make a musical about that?" and then go on to be totally amazed. Talented people can do incredible things. I can't wait to see it now.
Watch out, adam! Be prepared to get attacked from all directions by the Sondheimphiles.
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia
I'm waiting for the "just because it doesn't have someone flying in a cherrypicker" responses.
But yeah, as much as I enjoy some of Sondheim's other works (Forum, Into the Woods, Follies, and others), this one does absolutely NOTHING for me. The first act is painfully dull and act 2 is only marginally better.
Algy wrote: I've got the London CD, and whilst I've listened to it all the way through a couple of times, the one (well two) tracks that I love the most are "Sunday" (and it's reprise) - it just seems so rich and textured, with proper layers and feeling and everything.
I know exactly what you mean- that song is my favourite too! I have the Carnegie Hall version but don't like it too much. The part of the song that I love the most isn't the same: the bit where they sing "on an island in the river-aaa-aaah-aaaaa..." etc- I love that part!!! They have such wonderful voices! I love "Its Hot up Here", "Colour and Light" and "Everybody Loves Louis" as well.

I had heard parts of different versions but it wasn't until I sat and listened to a complete recording in order that I really loved it. Once I got to "Sunday", it all came together and made sense.
It seems like this show really depends on the chemistry between Dot and George, even more so than is normally required between leads. If they don't connect in the right way, the magic is lost.
Don't be too sure I'm as crooked as I'm supposed to be.
I must admit to falling asleep during the Broadway production - I wasn't as estatic about either lead man or lady, they didn't engage me at all. I liked the RNT a little better - if only for the lead performances. However, the latest London revival has made me look at the pece afresh and the cd has rarely left the player.
The London production was one of the best evenings I've had in a theatre FOR AGES! So touching....made me cry like a baby. And that cd is BLOODY GOOD....much better than the Broadway one in my opinion....
