My local community theater has just offered me the position of musical director on "Cabaret", but here's the catch: I've always wanted to play Sally Bowles and have a REALLY good shot at the role (around 60% or more--it's a small town)! Of course, if I accept the position as MD, I can't audition for Sally, but if I decline and DON'T get the role, I lose out on both opportunities. HELP!!! What would YOU do???
Go and try for Sally... if you don't get it, at least you know you tried, otherwise, you'll always be wondering "what if" and it may lead to frustration.

OMG! Why didn't I think of that? Great suggestion, Tim. It's never been done there, since MD is on the audition panel. I can't imagine how that might complicate casting, but it's worth a shot. (On the other hand, who wants to be the high maintenance one in a small arts community?)
Also, to clarify my original posting, I didn't mean to belittle the opportunity to direct the music. I have strong feelings about the music of this particular piece and how it should be approached, and we have some great local musicians who would be incredible to work with. I guess that's the internal struggle for me: the potter or the pot? ...so to speak... I'm rambling Updated On: 2/18/06 at 01:26 PM
Depends. Would you regret it if you didn't try out. I was a performer so I know I would always be jealous and kicking myself if I didn't at least try. Or you can try Tim's suggestion.
