When casting a Broadway show/ Major Motion Picture, does the director of the project have a say in who gets what part? I've always figured they did, but a friend of mine told me that all of that is handled by the casting director. That the director is supposed to work with the cast he's dealt.
No, a director has a lot of say and most have the final say.
"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"
At least on Broadway, the casting director is the one who screens talent and puts the best options before the director to make the final decision. Every show and CD/Dir relationship is different, but generally speaking, that is the way it works.
