Stop worrying if your vision is new.
Let others make that decision-
They usually do.
You keep moving on.
Anything you do,
Let it come from you.
Then it will be new.
Give us more to see...

You should mention the 1939 Shubert musical revue STREETS OF PARIS because they introduced Carmen Miranda to American audiences. She was an absolute sensation - the first Latina musical superstar.
Zoot Suit starred Edward James Olmos has a short Broadway run in the 70s.
Mambo Kings opens on Broadway in August.

There's also Frank Loesser's 'Senor Discretion Himself,' a musical set in Mexico, which went unproduced in his lifetime, but was recently done at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. (Loesser himself just got a Helen Hayes Award nomination for it.)
And 'We'll Take the Town,' a 1962 musical about Pancho Villa starring Robert Preston, who reportedly swears it was his favorite role. Harold Karr and Matt Dubey ('Happy Hunting') wrote the score, and I think Sondheim once listed one of its songs as something he wished he'd written. Barbra Streisand also recorded one of its songs, 'How Does the Wine Taste?' It also featured Pia Zadora as a kid, and it closed on the road.
Also look into Lerner & Loewe's Paint Your Wagon from 1951. It involves the inter-racial romance of a young white woman and a Mexican kid. Forget about the movie version. They took the Mexican character out and replaced him with Clint Eastwood. Definately pick up the Paint Your Wagon original cast recording. Updated On: 5/9/05 at 04:07 PM
