Reports are in that Johnny Depp is in negotiations to star as the new Willy Wonka. Gene Wilder he ain't. Why ruin a classic?

There's an older thread about this, although it happened before Depp's rumored involvement.

Actually I think this could turn out to be really good. I think Tim Burton is the perfect choice of director. And I like J. Depp a lot. He was great in Pirates of the Caribean. I think he could bring something new to the role. And as much as I like the original...you kind of wonder what they were smoking when they made it.

"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" is and forever will be one of my all time favorite movies. It's actually one of the first movies I can remember renting at the local video store. Oh...those were the days.

I'm with Erik on this. Johnny Depp's involvement won't be the thing to ruin a classic. He's an incredibly versatile actor and he would be fantastic in the role, I think.

Even though Depp is 40, I think he appears younger looking than what Wonka should be. And Wilder was even younger when he did it. I was hoping to see an older Wonka.

I have DirecTV and when you're watching E! they're this interactive news thing, so I read it (like always) and there was an article confirming that Johnny Depp will be playing Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's remake.

i agree that the Depp/Burton team is good for it. And i think they will get even closer to the wonderful dark tone of the source novels (Roald Dahl was TWISTED) than the first version (he was Lemony Snicket before Lemony Snicket was cool). There are some nice things in the score and i'll like to see how well Depp sings. i look forward to this project....did Burton also do GIANT PEACH (the latest movie)? can't remember...that is also Dahl source.

Yeah, I think Johnny Depp will be incredible as Wonka. He was absolutely AMAZING in Pirates, probably one of the best performances I've seen in a movie in a while...Broadway and Tony-worthy; hopefully he gets at least nominated for an Oscar.

I too would like to see how well he sings....a revival of Pirates of Penzance (80s version) with him as the Pirate King would be awesome!
