Universal was estimating it would make 10 million over the weekend. It made 4.8 million. So, not many did go apparently. It's always a risk to put a movie in theaters nowadays. I enjoyed it with my brother in law and his husband, it was funny, lovely, and about time.
However, Billy bitching and blaming yesterday was annoying and won't push anyone to see this.
I don't know. I'll take the low numbers as a good sign. Being gay has become normal, so making that the selling point just isn't enough anymore. I'm not even talking about the actual movie, I haven't seen it, but the publicity. It doesn't look very interesting to me... a Strange Loop's Usher type character would be better.
Beyoncé is not an ally. Actions speak louder than words, Mrs. Carter. #Dubai #$$$
Unfortunately, being gay is not normal in many, many places in America. 21 states still have no laws against gay conversion therapy and in many cultures, it's considering "amoral". I think you probably live in a major metropolitan area like myself so it's easy to think it's just accepted everywhere because it's accepted around us and truly embraced.
We are going backwards in this Country so I see more restrictive laws and the eventual ban of gay marriage, sadly.
I have not seen it - I will wait until it moves to Peacock, or HBO Max or Netflix . It's inevitable it will wind up on a streaming platform much sooner than later since it bombed at the box office.
Most people have blamed Eichner for this failure - no one wanted to see him in a movie. They find him whiny and too full of himself (and that was before this past weekend ) and now they feel he's gotten much worse.
Not to mention neither he nor McFarlane are 'leading men' in cinema to attract big audiences.
I saw it last weekend with a few friends, and we all enjoyed the movie. It's very funny, and quite touching if you don't find standard rom com tropes cringey. I loved Difficult People, so the humor was very much up my alley.
I was a bit confused about the marketing and the branding of this movie at first too. The things this movie shows were pretty run of the mill stuff (very on point, but very daily occurrence kind of things) for me. Having said that, my friend who came out very late in life and is very... let's call him sheltered, said that he found the movie very shocking at times. He said he's still not used to watching honest, true portrayals of gay life done in a nonchalant way. So I guess there's some truth in the marketing about it breaking some barriers. There's genuine criticism to be made about the movie, especially how they're using their effeminate, fat, POC characters as one-dimensional comic relief non characters, but I personally don't think it's one movie's responsibility to be the banner-movie to cover every type of representation, and the stories it does tell is a good enough story on its own.
As for the criticism about Eichner, I find it quite underserving and shallow. I'm so tired of keyboard warriors soft-cancelling people for being "too much" (e.g. LMM). There are way worse things to be. Looking at today's internet discourse alone, ripping into Billy Eichner for no reason other than "he's annoying", but quasi-accepting Christian Walker despite every stunt he's pulled in last 6 months alone... Dear lord.

Saw it. Hated it. Bad acting, dreadfully unfunny. Covers similar terrain as Fire Island and All Over the Guy (made 20 years ago) but I think both of those are better movies (even with Fire Island's bad acting).
The movie is absolutely amazing. Don't believe the haters or the people obsessed with the "low" box office. Only a humorless slag without a soul would hate this film.

I dare ask, what ‘ amazed’ you the most in this film?
It was a very cute movie, the first 3rd is a little slow, but once we get to Bobby and Aaron dating, the movie really takes off. Amazing cameos abound as well.
Outside of the movie itself, the group I saw it with brought up the idea of what we are going to the movies for.? With the advent of streaming and rising cost of tickets, what kind of film do we want to see in room of other people?
Classic rom-coms? Yeah, they probably don't make the cut anymore.
We all agreed we can't wait to be back to see "Triangle of Sadness"
Actress Dot Marie Jones (never known for class) said in an interview for everyone to 'go see the f***ing movie - it's (homosexuality) not contagious'. And she blamed it on 'homophobia' from straight people that the movie bombed.
Sure Dot Marie - that's one way to get them in the doors in week 2.

Oh I see. You’re one of the haters who has probably not even bothered to see it before hating on it. In answer to your smug little question:
1. First gay rom-com with all gay leads released on over 2,000 screens by a major studio, Universal - historic.
2. It is laugh out loud hysterical from start to finish.
3. It is extremely moving on top of being hysterical.
4. On top of being historic, hysterical and moving, there are things in this movie that I honestly do not know how didn’t get cut as not to offend the delicate sensibilities of straight people. There are Grindr hookups, multiple graphic gay sex scenes, two (2) foursomes, a debate over whether Lincoln was gay, and an entire cast of gay/bi/trans characters who are all out and it’s no big deal. It just “is”.
5. Cameos by Kristen Chenowith, Debra Messing, Amy Schumer, Ben Stiller, Everett Quinton, and Harvey Fierstein
6. Score and one song written by Marc Shaiman
There is more, but I shouldn’t have bothered responding to you in the first place.
I’m not expecting Oscar noms for this except maybe for the song “Love is Not Love”, but it will definitely get some Golden Globe love.
It will be on a Peacock December 2nd. I'm sure it will be more popular streaming and I think it should have always just been a movie to stream. His complaints about it bombing and blaming 90% of Americans didn't help though.....
