Finally got a chance to see this yesterday, and it was incredible!

We saw the off-Broadway musical version (and then movie) with Peter Dinklage and hated them, so it was a great to see a completely different take on the same basic concept that I absolutely loved. Sat front row, which was a thrilling place to watch this particular show - to be able to see every facial expression and misty eye of James McAvoy, what a treat. We saw him in The Ruling Class a few years ago, and while he was great in that, too, I think his intensity and physicality are uniquely well-suited for this role. The rest of the ensemble were also excellent, and the applause at the end was vigorous, to say the least.

We've seen four shows so far this trip, and this one definitely leads the pack for me! Sad that today is the last show of the run.

For those interested and who missed this BAM production National Theater LIve captured the West End production that opened December 2019. I would imagine because of Covid it did not get the U.S. release it otherwise might have (or I missed it because pre-BAM it was not on my radar). Right now, according to the NTL website, it looks like there are limited US showings this summer (i.e., Pittsfield, MA in July! Evanston, IL in June -- mostly at colleges and museums at a quick glance)- but perhaps now that the show has closed in NY dates and markets will expand. Maybe it eventually shows up on National Theater At Home. Not the same as being there, but better than not seeing it at all.
