I just read the reviews of Matthew Lopez's play The Inheritance and wanted to ask if anyone on the board was planning to see it? The play is a seven hour epic about the lives of two generations of gay men that has been compared, understandably, to Angels in America. Vanessa Redgrave also makes a cameo appearance to lend some gravitas to the final scenes.

The play is a 7 hour soap opera. It’s mildly funny, mildly entertaining, has some mildly novel ideas and can even be mildly moving at points - especially the final act of the second part (Redgrave contributes but is probably a little too aged to be 100% effective). But I don’t personally consider this to be the same level of Angels In America at all. I would still recommend and I hope this can be seen in an off-Broadway New York run. It’s hard not to be a little disappointed given the hype and ambition - though when the cast bow at the end you can tell they think they’re changing the world.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

^ hmm that's what I'm afraid of, and 7 hours is a LOT to dedicate to a work that might just be mediocre.

The Inheritance is a remarkably moving theatrical experience.  The production worked perfectly on the Young Vic stage. I wonder how it will work in a traditional West End house.

There were a lot of comparisons to Angels in America. I actually found The Inheritance to be a much richer experience, and without the annoying stereotypes that Kushner tends to pepper his plays with. The characters in The Inheritance seemed real to me.
