'So it's an ANNIE for tweenage boys. But do tweenage boys flock to the theatre?
Reidel was right about Brantley putting a damper on the excitement.'

It's more likely tweenage girls will flock to Newsies and TBH Disney caters to that market extremely well. It'll become an open run no doubt about it, I wouldn't be surprised if it recoups its investment by the end of the year.

NEWSIES really is enjoyable but I also don't know if it's what I'd call best new musical. It's a fun evening, the cast is talented and radiates energy. The show is obviously very marketable and easy to tour. However, there's little about it that's magical and the writing, music, story, are a far cry from brilliant. To be fair, I don't think theatrical brilliance is really the show's intention.

I'd be unsurprised if NEWSIES won best musical for all the above reasons but I think ONCE is the far more daring, beautiful, brilliant, and deserving show.

But how long before those tweenage girls realize the teenage boys onstage are in their mid 20's and dating each other?

Jeremy Jordan is straight. But anyways when was the last time that wasn't true of a new musical?

Maybe not, but tweenage girls will flock to the theater to watch cute tweenage boys on stage.

I think everyone on here is giving Brantley too much credit and too much power. He has never really given a Disney show a rave, so we shouldn't expect him to now. I mean, he gave Lysistrata the best review of the year (at the time) and look what happened to that. He also didn't like The Lion King... that speaks for itself. Just like everyone on here, these reviews are OPINIONS of specific individuals (and I'd say that politics are also often played on the reviewing scene, too). They are only given more credit because they have a job that puts them in that position.

Look at Wicked, it got very mixed reviews and has gone on to be one of the biggest hits in recent memory. Minus a select few, Newsies has been getting positive reviews. So that fact, coupled with the history of the Tony committee, the insanely incredible word of mouth for the show, its high advance and current grosses, its profitability and touring potential, to say that it doesn't have a chance at winning Best Musical because of ONE MAN'S review is absolutely ludicrous.

I also think it's way too early count GHOST and LEAP OF FAITH out yet. Particularly the latter.

As it stands right now, my money's on ONCE. But to be perfectly honest, if GHOST and LEAP OF FAITH get mixed-to-positive reviews, it's anyone's game.

Ghost got mixed-positive reviews in London so I imagine they'll have similar reviews on Broadway.

So it comes down to the same ol' showdown almost every year. The little show that could vs. the big splashy blockbuster. Once vs. Newsies.

I've heard the rumor Jordan was straight and then I saw him on the VIEW where he said his mom used to catch him as a boy in the shower making believe he was Celine and Mariah.

It's good to have a few token straights in musicals these days.

Wall Street Journal is negative: (although it's not much of a review, more like a snippet)

Curtain - someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure he's engaged or maybe married now to Ashley Spencer from You're the One that I Want.

But GHOST has been getting heavily negative reviews here on this board...everybody here seems to think that it is going to fail miserably.

So Broadwaydevil, you started those rumors.
Good for him if he married a pretty reality star,
someday gays will be allowed to marry also.

Why doesn't anyone have a sense of humor anymore.

Although the dancing was incredible, I thought the same of How To Succeed in Business and Anything Goes last year...

I agree with Brantly with the dancing, it was a bit silly to have backflips and stuff all over the place... lol but if there weren't any, we'd probably be complaining about that too. it really was like what he described though.

Also, Jeremy sings his face off in this, which is great!! I also loved the songs in Newsies. (except for that solo in the theatre scene by the black lady... i thought "Wtf?")
But back to Jeremy... Jeremy's great. Imagine all of the male solos being sung by him in a suit with a gun... that was Bonnie and Clyde... a much simpler musical that was easier to take in.

Ryan Steele is single and looking. The girls on the Newsies walking tour told me so.

I'd say that it's more like the little dud that couldn't. Or shouldn't. But will.

Of course Brantley's review for Newsies was negative. Could anyone have thought it wouldn't be?
