"Imagine if Broadway shows started having all the roles lyp-synched/dubbed. Yikes!"

I don't know if that's a valid comparison... live theater is supposed to be just that, "live." Movies are inherently recorded and have been tweaking the sound since (in some fashion) practically since the first of the talkies, including "looping" (re-recording dialogue in the studio for better quality audio and more consistent sound.)

And historically, movie musicals have had their casts lip-sync to pre-recorded tracks for the same reason, with only a handful of them allowing "live" on-set singing. Doesn't seem TOO heretical to use someone else's voice (honestly and with credit given). I'd PREFER it to be same actor/voice obviously, but am not gonna be annoyed about it as much as with live theater using "dubbing."

Are the major roles an open casting/audition or is it invite only? I would assume that they would have a list of people they are interested in and then invite them to audition? I would love to know who they are thinking of for Marius, Enjolras, Cosette, and Eponine.

There was a rumor about Eponone - some girl who won one of those TV talent shows in England.

I thought the rumor was Lucy Hale for Eponine.

Innis: Are you saying that just because she works with a good voice teacher that she can't be artificially darkening? A lot of trained people artificially darken--even professional opera singers sometimes do it. A preteen girl does not sound like that naturally. She's pushing her voice just like Charlotte Church did. You can even see her jaw wobble when she sings, which is a sign of tension.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

Could you be thinking of Samantha Barks? She came in third for I'd Do Anything, and she played Eponine in the 25th Anniversary Concert.

If Emma Watson is to play Cosette and if her singing is to be dubbed, I might suggest Jackie Evancho for that. Either that, or cast her directly in a role (Young Cosette?). She is both a soprano and an actress with her card (she is filming this month and next in Vancouver, Robert Redford's 'The Company You Keep', where she plays his protagonist character's daughter in an important role). This girl is "genius talented' and those that don't take note of what she brings to any production (pretty much), do so at their own loss."

Sources have confirmed that Watson is not doing this film.

Based on the original article from Baz Bamigboye -- please scroll down:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2040804/BAZ-BAMIGBOYE-Francesca-Annis-sing-Ladies-Who-Lunch-number.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

it doesn't attribute the quote directly to Hugh about Emma Watson's non-casting. It could be Baz adding the info from other sources.

Awesomesauce!

"Things are underway. They are actually underway!"

That's what a 12 year old me said back in the days of A Current Affair and Sally Jesse Raphael, when Bruce Beresford wasn't under suspicion of offing his wife and there were 3 US national tours making the rounds. =D

My, how time flies. Except now, I actually think things are really underway. Like really, for real.

Anne Hathaway has been confirmed in the role of Fantine, by Cameron Mackintosh himself - in a BBC radio interview:

Check it out at around 28'30" -- he also says that Hugh has arrived in London - so the interview must have been only a few days old.

"2013?"

That's what I was wondering. Guess it could be a tiered Oscar-bait release where it's in a handful of NYC and LA theaters at the tail end of 2012 to qualify, then an actual national release in early '13.

BOX OFFICE MOJO is considered the most reliable source of movie release information. According to its schedule of releases, LES MISERABLES is scheduled for WIDE RELEASE on December 7, 2012. The movie will be distributed by UNIVERSAL STUDIOS, which is parent company to WORKING TITLE ( main producers for the film, along with Cameron Mackintosh). Closer to release date, BoxOfficeMojo is usually able to provide the number of screens which will show the movie in the United States.

Mackintosh said that we might now have to wait till 2013 to see the film. The post production might not be finished in time to meet the film's December 2012 release.

He actually said he didn't know how long post-production would take. I have to believe they will do everything to make that Dec. 7 date (sounds like five-six months in post if it finishes in June), otherwise it won't come out for another year since this looks like it's viewed as an Oscar-bait movie.

LOL! @ them just looking for Caucasian actors. Well, there's goes my chances to be in the movie. It would've been nice to have a multi-cultural cast.
