Rosie Says She Didn't Insult Cancer Survivor

Rosie O'Donnell, who the New York Post reports has cut down on her anti-depression medication, is depressed and angry over an accusation that she made an outrageous remark to an employee of the soon-to-disappear Rosie magazine.

According to People magazine, the magazine's publishers Gruner + Jahr have put together a 40-page legal complaint that Rosie told a female manager at the magazine who had survived a bout with cancer "You know what happens to people who lie? They get cancer."

The Post notes that the alleged remark, if true, would be especially outrageous because Rosie's mom died of breast cancer in 1973. Moreover, Rosie has campaigned for a cure for the disease and even written a book about it.

While Rosie admits she blew her top at the woman, she insists that the idea she would have made the alleged remark is simply "absurd."

She's a woman carrying around a lot of pain, a lot of rage, a lot of creative energy. Like many comics, her pain/rage fuel her, early on became a coping skill. Her incisive POV is sometimes witty, sometimes a mean-spirited assault. So yeah, her personal style is a double-edged sword -- bluntness to cut through BS, bluntness to inflict the same kind of pain on other's that she's been through. I read FIND ME. She had a crappy childhood -- and I know, I know, who didn't? We've all ODed on the victim thing. But she works on all these issues, as she candidly admits, and sometimes the woman fails, big time. She lost whatever sense of decent boundaries she's developed in a heated, unguarded moment as she fought a controlling foe for critically important turf--a mag with her name on it. Her anger got the better of her, and her remark was contemptable. She shouldn't have said it, and she should've apologized for it long ago.

But I watched her show, saw her rally many people for B'way, help NYC bigtime after 9/11, put 30-some kids through college with Kellogs, etc, etc. Do those good deeds excuse her being a bitch of death to a woman with cancer? No. But I still have trouble seeing her as a sub-human monster. I hope TABOO does well (a lot of reps are involved that matter in the theater more than hers), and I hope she rebounds. This may be a defining moment in her life, who knows?

MY OPINION:

1. She's human. Who makes mistakes. Like all of us.
2. She a human who makes mistakes like all of us in the public eye who is also under TARGET at the moment.
3. A lot of people talk about her here like they know her. Fine, if you do, and you speak from a place of knowledge. But, the rest of us DO NOT KNOW HER. We can not possibly know how she really is or understand contexts of situations. It's so silly to form such grand opinions of her when we are gathering our info from the media--who NEVER lies or slants truths.

THUS,

1. I will wait until I have met her to form an opinion of her.
2. I will wait until I see TABOO to form an opinion of this show.

We sure have used up a TON of bytes on this web site discussing her and the show. Therefore, it must have some worth and meaning to us. Otherwise, why would we waste our time and energy?
