Sometimes, on special occasions, the star may even play with the audience.
On the closing show of THE BOY FROM OZ, the show opened much later than usual, which added to the high expectations of the very excited crowd. During the usual entrance, Hugh as Peter Allen would come out of the shadows and sit at the piano before the stage lights open.
That afternoon, Hugh bounded on the stage, sat at the piano to strong and excited entrance applause -- but when he said insouciantly " We're extending!!" ( knowing the audience knew fully well that the show is closing!) -- the crowd went wild!! Everyone was shouting " Yes,yes, yes!!"
That evening was more of a luv-in than a usual closing show
I must say that the recent BEST MAN revival was so celeb-stuffed that the constant entrance applause became pretty irritating, at least the night I saw it. Prior to that, I always found it quite an exciting part of my Broadway experience. Seeing V.Woolf next week and, much as I admire Letts and Morton, am not sure it's entirely appropriate to applaud wildly when they come staggering on.....
Scream and yell the actors name= ABSOLUTELY NOT (I can think of many times I have been in the audience and heard this happen. Most recently I can recall the Darren Criss short run in How to Succeed. Some people, and not just the teen girls, forget that they are not at a concert)
I love entrance applause. The endless vamping in "Glamorous Life" as CZJ/Bernadette walked out, the over-indulgent FOLLIES entrance with the recent revival are my favourites. (Not being sarcastic).
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I'm not a fan of entrance applause, but then again, I'm one of those people who doesn't like to give applause except at the end of the act and the end of the show. It takes you out of the moment, I think, and I'm not really there to watch, say, Audra McDonald act the role of Bess, I'm there to see the story of Bess. Would I rather see Audra McDonald than some random person off the street? Duh, because Audra McDonald would inhabit the character more. I'm there to watch Bess' story, and only after the show is over will I think about the actor who portrayed her. Unless, of course, the acting is so atrocious that I can't focus on the show at all.
