So while its fresh in my mind I figured I should write a mini-review of Vegas' new Broadway import in Mel Brooks' The Producers.
Out of all of the Broadway drop-offs in Vegas, this one had the most noticable cuts. About (7) songs in total that have disappeared into Musical Theatre oblivion.
The performances are quite strong considering today was the 1st public preview. Brad Oscar, who I had seen do "Max" during Nathan Lane's initial run, shines in the role. A hand-in-hand perfect match for him. A role he has played more than 1100 times in total. Larry Raben portrays "Leo" in a very underplayed, subtle, and almost minimalistic way. It may have been a character choice, but understandable as his love for "Ulla" happens within one scene. "That Face" was no where in site! Leigh Zimmerman does a fine singing job as "Ulla," but goes in and out of the 'Sveedish' accent througout the show. Comedic standouts are Fred Applegate and Rich Affannato as "Franz Liebkind" and "Carmen Ghia" respectively. Even if their more comedic moments were cut, they both are clear scene stealers.
Now, onto David Hasselhoff. I have to say, for what I was expecting, I was quite surprised. Granted, it was his first true performance in the role, there is quite some room for growth (no pun intended). He is noticably the tallest company member, towering over Brad, Larry, and Leigh. He hasn't completely honed in on what makes "Roger DeBris" who he is. In fact, it was like watching a friend in drag, when they really shouldn't be. Perhaps the flamboyancy will ripen in the weeks to come. Considering he is the "star" of the show according to the billboards on my way to work everyday.
I wish this show the best of luck in its run at the PARIS. It's nice to have what seems to be a tour of broadway shows here in town. When in fact they are open and shut!
