Cole Escola is Mary Todd Lincoln in OH, MARY! Off-Broadway  Jan 27 2024, 11:13:31 AM

Saw the first performance last night and really enjoyed it. If you are familiar with Cole Escola’s work and are a fan of their very specific comedic sensibility, this show delivers and I highly recommend it.

PRIMA FACIE Previews  Apr 13 2023, 12:37:00 AM

Saw the second preview from the front mezz (which was a great spot) and I thought Comer's performance was fantastic.  Cannot fathom what it must be like to do that 8 times per week. I wasn't able to wait at the stage door but they do have it barriered off and there were people waiting for her, and an SUV waiting on the curb, so I assume she did come out.

Between the Lines  Jul 23 2022, 03:11:16 PM

Saw this last night on a total whim knowing nothing about it, and enjoyed it overall.  I wish I'd known Arielle Jacobs was otherwise engaged.  Aubrey Matalon was very good, but I suspect Jacobs gives a better performance.  Vicki Lewis was also out.  Jake David Smith was by far the standout of the production in terms of the cast.  Otherwise, would echo a lot of what's already been said - the production values are very high (costumes and projections - though Aub

INTO THE WOODS Reviews  Jul 21 2022, 08:24:41 PM

Sara and Gavin were both out when I saw it last night (7/20), as well as tonight apparently.  Any intel appreciated, as I definitely want to go back again and see them in this.

Max Clayton was amazing tonight!  Jun 21 2022, 11:58:01 PM

Saw Max tonight and agree with all the praise for him in this thread.  I've seen the show a few times with Hugh already (all with rush tickets after the first time), and it was definitely worth seeing Max's take.  If they put him on during Hugh's upcoming vacation, I highly recommend going then just to see how he does it.  Also recommend going the rush ticket route - I strolled up to the Box Office at 11 am and there was no wait and I got a great seat for $49 (L 12)

TAKE ME OUT Previews  Mar 29 2022, 11:41:11 PM

Saw tonight's performance.  I agree with much of what has been said upthread: Adams was charming and entertaining, Williams took a bit of time to warm up.  I thought JTF's performance worked well, but would have loved to see Denis O'Hare's take; I can certainly imagine him being great in the role.  I agree with the poster who said the confrontation scene in Act 2 didn't work for them because Oberholtzer's characterization of Shane is somewhat childlike t

Music Man Rush Line.  Feb 3 2022, 04:30:08 PM

Thanks for these tips!  Based on recent reports, I got there at 8:02 a.m. today (a Thursday) and was the 6th person in line (I didn't ask people ahead of me what time they got there, but 3 of them were sitting in camping chairs so they may have been there a while).  By 8:30 a.m., there were 12 more people behind me in line.  At 10:00 a.m., when the box office opened, there were more than 40 people total in line.  It was lightly raining and the temperature was around 40

New Disney musical WINNIE THE POOH will open at Theater Row this fall  Oct 30 2021, 06:44:54 PM

Caught the 2 p.m. performance today (I live a 5 min walk from the venue, and it's only an hour long show).  Definitely aimed at young children, but if you're a grown-up who loves the Winnie the Pooh characters, it's sufficiently charming.  The theater is small enough that you can sit in the cheapest possible seats and be just fine.  I thought Jake Bazel, who plays Pooh, was by far the most impressive - he really nails the voice and is also a really good puppeteer.&n

Moulin Rouge at Emerson Colonial Theatre Reviews  Aug 6 2018, 02:02:57 AM

standingovation79 said: "the only thing that rings TRUE about Brantley's review is the BADLY WRITTEN book by John Logan (I can't believe the check cleared after the producers saw what his book read like)."

That is not what he said - the NYT review calls the book "baldly written", not "badly", and then goes on to say that it is "still trimmable".  In other words, Brantley is saying that as sparely (i.e., baldly) as the b

Dear Evan Hansen - Ben Platt Attendance  Jun 26 2017, 02:22:43 PM

Just want to second that Colton Ryan gives a terrific, somewhat different but in no way inferior performance in the role as compared to Ben Platt.  I saw Colton the weekend of the Tonys when Ben was on vocal rest, and saw Ben at the matinee this past Saturday.  I also have to second that Ben is great but clearly sick and tired and having to hold back in parts of some songs in order to give it his all in others - I hope he is able to rest and recover.  But the show is totally wo

Disney's Moana (2016)  Aug 19 2015, 11:42:37 PM

Not sure if he can, but he didn't in the live presentation.  The clip they showed was of his character, Maui, meeting Moana, and it didn't involve him singing either.

Disney's Moana (2016)  Aug 19 2015, 11:10:13 PM

I was at the D23 panel that presented this movie.  It looks beautiful!  Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was on hand to promote the film and talk about playing the demigod character of Maui.  In addition to the live musical performance that is excerpted in that youtube clip posted above, the presentation featured some lovely clips from the film.  One involved the depiction of the ocean itself as a character, including a flashback to the character of Moana as a

Finding Neverland at ART -- Reviews & Thougts SPOILERS!!!  Aug 7 2014, 12:53:07 AM
[SPOILERS] Just saw this tonight and really enjoyed it. I am a fan of the movie but thought it was incredibly sad and wasn't really sure how the story could work as a musical. I think for the most part, it worked really well. The cast was all very strong, including the four boys. Jeremy Jordan didn't seem too young for the role of Barrie the way he played it, and Laura Michelle Kelley was simply lovely in every way. I didn't think Carolee Carmello was underutilized. I will admit to findin
Unnatural Acts-Anyone go yet?  Jun 24 2011, 01:55:47 AM
Please see this if you can - Jess Burkle, my partner's roommate for all four years at Harvard is one of the actors, and he is very talented!

re: 'Ladies and gentlemen, Patti LuPone is not feeling well today.'  Apr 7 2008, 12:48:11 PM
I was at the performance, and I'm glad they said something in retrospect, though at the time the announcement was made, I thought it was jarring. It truly was hilarious to hear the collective gasp and murmuring in the audience, and the sigh of relief when it was clear she would still be going on. I thought she did a terrific job.

I think it's funny to see the back and forth on here between the lovers and the haters. Didn't PL herself refer to the fact that people either love her or h

re: 'Wicked' last night, 4/3-review from a 'Wicked' newbie  Apr 4 2008, 04:55:36 PM
Also, there are no red ruby slippers in WICKED.

When Nessarose receives them from her father, she refers to them as "jeweled shoes." While they are silver-colored, in the scene where Elphaba casts a spell on them, they glow red. It's a clear reference to the ruby slippers from the movie, especially combined with Nessarose's black-and-white-striped stockings, evoking the iconic image of the Wicked Witch of the East's legs sticking out from underneath Dorothy's house.

re: Wicked Orch Ticket 3/19 for Sale  Mar 17 2008, 02:22:07 PM
So I am assuming it is okay to sell tickets for above the face value for Broadway shows on eBay, as long as it is within a certain amount? The reason I ask is because my aunt bought 6 tickets to Mary Poppins for an evening show when she actually wanted the matinee.

Millie, did your aunt try calling ticketmaster to see if they would exchange the tickets? Even though it's supposedly a final sale, they have the discretion to make the exchange if you ask. I was able to do that wit

re: Political Jabs in shows  Feb 5 2008, 06:33:37 PM
Glinda refers to herself as an unelected official (ref 2000 election)

It was Nessarose who said that. Interesting; I never saw it as a reference to that, but it's quite possible.

re: The Little Dog is Not Happy About Chicago's Prudishness  Feb 4 2008, 06:07:28 PM
I disagree - I did think it was integral to the story. I didn't see the Broadway production, but in the Boston version, the nudity did add something that would be missing without it. And I don't say that out of enjoyment of the nudity, because the guy was nothing special. It represents extreme vulnerability on the part of the character at a key moment in the plot.
