Ron Clements and Jon Musker (the guys responsible for Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog, and our childhoods), are back with a brand-new film for Walt Disney Animation Studios, Moana. The film tells the story of Moana, a spirited teenager on an impossible mission to fulfill her ancestors’ quest. It’s set in the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, and Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.

“Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself,” Musker said. “She’s the kind of character we all root for, and we can’t wait to introduce her to audiences.” Well, Mr. Musker, we cannot wait to see more from the film and meet Moana as well! The film comes to theaters in late 2016.

So, it's safe (for now) to say that Moana will be another great Disney musical from the Lopezes.

But the concept sounds like it can warrant some sumptuous animation. One thing Disney rarely skimps on is its beautiful aesthetics.

So, it's safe (for now) to say that Moana will be another great Disney musical from the Lopezes.

As much as I would love those things to be true, I think all those things are pure speculation at this point, even the Lopezes' involvement.

They still have two years to change the title. The Lion King was originally titled "Simba" during pre-production and "The Princess and the Frog" had a title change when the French objected to "The Frog Princess".

I actually think that Disney should have kept the Rapunzel title. (I know, I know, boys wouldn't have wanted to see it or whatever, but either way it WAS a Disney Princess movie.)

And I think the title "Moana" is a fine one; I really hope Disney doesn't duck at the last second and change the title to some stupid adjective like they did with Frozen and Tangled.

I believe the Lopezes are working on another Disney project called Giants. This film is more intended as a film with music.

^^Apparently, according to a source, Giants just got shelved :/ But, the guy's also said that Moana was almost cancelled last year until the Moana fandom saved the movie (His own words). And I just found an article on Moana, last year from the directors and how it was making good process, so I call BS on both of these statements.

Until confirmation that it got shelved, let's say for now that Giants is coming in 2018.

I agree. Even if only 25% of native English readers parse it that way, it's still baiting. It's a Maori name and is a transliteration into English, so I think changing the spelling shouldn't be an issue. Mo'ana, Moanna, Moahna, whatever. I'm reminded of the signage out there that are perfectly legit names/words in their native languages but have unfortunate transliterations into English (Hung Far Low, Pho King, etc.). Which are pretty funny and memorable and all that, but probably not what Disney would be going after.

I don't think Disney has to be worried about the title. When they first changed "Rapunzel" to "Tangled," an IMDb search for the new name brought up a porno.
