Take the Book of Job, and add a dash of the prodigal son parable. Throw in the flavor of the late 20th century, season it with the wit of comedic playwright Neil Simon and you have The Whole Backstage Theatre's fall show- "God's Favorite". The show takes place at the Benjamin mansion on the North Shore of Long Island in the mid 1970's, where resides a tycoon (Tommy Austin as Joe Benjamin), his wife (Dianne Creel as Rose Benjamin), a drunken prodigal son (Anthony Wildfong as David Benjamin), a pair of kookie twins (John Barrow as Ben Benjamin and April Isom as Sarah Benjamin) and two servants (Dwight Holland as Morris and Valerie Clemons as Mady).

One night a messenger from God, a wise cracking guy from Queens, (Taylor Hyatt as Sidney Lipton) is sent to tell Joe that he is God's favorite and all he needs to do is renounce God. When he refuses, he is visited by all the afflictions imaginable. Amid the seeming tragic circumstances, this Neil Simon comedy will leave you rolling in the aisles. Director, Janet Jordan has cast all eight roles very well and gives the audience a night of hilarity.

First performed in 1974, the language in "God's Favorite" is as simple as today's popular sitcoms. The script is packed with humor; viewers will find a play-on-words in nearly every line. Will Joe remain steadfast? Will he survive this test of his faith?

"God's Favorite" will run on the main stage inside the Dot Moore Auditorium of the Whole Backstage Theatre September 24, 25, 26 at 7:00p.m. and September 30 at 2:00p.m. and October 1 and 2 at 7:00p.m. Tickets for "God's Favorite" are now available through the Whole Backstage Theatre's box office located at 1120 Rayburn Avenue in Guntersville. The box office can be contacted at 256-582-7469 Monday through Friday 9a.m. - 1p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for senior adults over 55 and students. The doors open each night at 6:00 p.m. The show runs approximately one hour and 45 minutes. See you at the theatre!
