Wetumpka Depot Players to Present A SOUTHERN BELLE PRIMER, Begin. 5/29

By:

Bring out the good silver, tease up your hair and dig out your mama's best casserole recipe. The Wetumpka Depot Players will soon be reminding audiences that being a Southern Belle is not a part time job. Instead it's a cradle to the grave commitment. A Southern Belle Primer (Or Why Princess Margaret Could Never Be a Kappa Kappa Gamma) will run for one weekend only at the Depot Theatre beginning May 29th. Always Patsy Cline author Ted Swindley has taken Marilyn Schwartz's charming book of the same title, and crafted it into a delightful evening at the theatre proclaiming the joys of southern sisterhood.

The play features three generations of Southern belles who reveal what it takes to live in a society that has not gone with the wind. The ladies ponder things like the Top 10 funeral casseroles, the twelve signs of the silver pattern Zodiac, the 10 golden rules of a Southern belle, plus fashion faux pas, hairdos, beauty pageants and football. Throw in tales of Junior League meetings , girdles and "beauty pageant big hair" and the ladies south of the Mason-Dixon line will leave audiences laughing at the customs associated with Southern propriety and protocol.

A trio of talented Depot veterans will represent the generations of Southern women. Hazel Jones will play the candid, sweet tea drinking Southern Belle and hostess of the Natchez Pilgrimage Tour, Davis Carlyle Sotheby. Kim Mason, plays Martha Anne, Davis Carlyle's liberated daughter. Rounding out the generations represented is the opinionated and rebellious granddaughter, Sister, played by Meagan Evans.

Directed by Depot executive director Kristy Meanor, the special "season extra'' production runs May 29-31 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, June 1 at 2 pm. Tickets are $10 in advance at the box office or $12 online. The theatre is located at 300 S Main Street in historic downtown Wetumpka.
