VBC To Observe Earth Day 4/22
By: Reynard Loki
Plans are budding as the Von Braun Center prepares for its First Annual Earth Day Celebration. As part of the VBC’s ongoing efforts to “Go Green,” the VBC will observe Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22nd, by planting a tree. The tree planting ceremony will take place at the corner of Clinton and Monroe Street at 11:00 am.
VBC Director of Special Projects, Johnny Hunkapiller, is spearheading the VBC’s “Green” effort and hopes the VBC Earth Day Celebration will encourage others to think about our planet. “Earth Day is held each year to promote awareness of environmental issues. By planting a tree, we can do a small part to remind our employees how important a clean environment is for generations to come.” The "Green Effort" continues to grow daily at the Von Braun Center as team members pull together to recycle and save energy. Since the kick-off of the VBC's conservation initiative on October 1st, 2008, the Von Braun Center has recycled tons of waste materials and is moving towards its ultimate goal of becoming a 0% landfill contributor.2,374lbs. of plastic bottles
313 lbs. of aluminum cans
14,680 lbs. of cardboard
27,820 lbs. of scrap metal
696 spent fluorescent lamps
In addition, 210,280 lbs. of trash have been diverted from landfills by sending it to the Waste to Energy Facility used to supply process steam to Redstone Arsenal. Please make plans to join with the VBC in “Going Green” this Earth Day and beyond!
