Terrific New Theatre Opens Season 34 With THE CAKE
Terrific New Theatre (TNT) will open its 34th season in August with the emotional but deliciously funny play, The Cake, inspired by events leading to the U.S. Supreme Court case Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The show will run Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from Aug. 8-31, plus two Sunday matinees. Set in the South, this topical comedy was written by Bekah Brunstetter, a writer and producer of the television series This Is Us, who has authored other plays as well.
The story concerns a woman named Della - the proprietor of a legendary bakery in North Carolina - who has recently been cast on her favorite television baking competition. All is going well until the daughter of her late best friend comes home from New York City to ask Della to bake a cake for her upcoming wedding. When Della learns that Jen is engaged to a woman, she is forced to re-examine her deeply held beliefs, as questions of morals, judgment and family swirl all around. For the first time in her life, Della has to think for herself.
TNT's production of The Cake marks the directorial debut of esteemed local actress Cari Gisler Oliver and stars audience favorite Holly Croney Dikeman as Della. The play also features Al Cohn and TNT newcomers Taylor Hale, Gabrielle Semoine and Steven Sullivan. Rounding out the creative team are stage manager Rachael Pike, set designer Stephen Fister and lighting designer Scott Littleton. Tam DeBolt is now in her fourth season as TNT's executive director. The production will perform Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and two Sundays (Aug. 18 and 25) at 2:30 p.m.
With the 2019-20 season, TNT for the first time is offering patrons the convenience of online ticket sales. Individual tickets, season packages and Flex Passes can be purchased now by visiting www.terrificnewtheatre.com/tickets. Of course, patrons still can place orders by email and telephone.
