TNT Brings Local Legends Together in SHIRLEY VALENTINE

By:

Renowned director and TNT co-founder Carl Stewart and acclaimed storyteller/actress Dolores Hydock will once again combine their formidable talents in Terrific New Theatre's next production, the one-woman play "Shirley Valentine," running June 7-30. The pair's theatrical collaborations over the past two decades are legendary, and this production reunites them for the first time since Stewart retired as TNT's Artistic Director in summer 2016.

Hydock will star as the title character, a put-upon Liverpool housewife who rediscovers her zest for life on a surreptitious holiday in Greece. Wondering what has happened to her youth and feeling stagnant and in a rut, Shirley Valentine finds herself regularly alone and talking to the wall even while in the company of her emotionally distant husband. When her best friend offers to pay for a trip for two to Greece, she leaves her husband behind and heads for a fortnight of rest and relaxation. However, those two weeks turn into much longer once Shirley realizes how very bereft her life in England has been.

Written by Willy Russell, "Shirley Valentine" premiered in 1986. The play won the 1988 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy and the 1989 Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. It was nominated for the 1989 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play and the 1989 Tony Award for Best Play.

The production staged by TNT - which is now under the artistic direction of Tam DeBolt - runs Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees on June 10 and June 24 at 2:30 p.m. Rounding out the creative team are lighting and set designer D. Connor McVey and stage manager Neal Hunter Hyde.
