RMTC Hosts National Search for “The MLK Project” - Submissions Due 9/1
Red Mountain Theatre Company (Birmingham, AL) and its Executive Director Keith Cromwell, in collaboration with Lee Sentell (Alabama Tourism Director) and Dr. Lawrence J. Pijeaux (President and CEO of Birmingham Civil Rights Institute) are hosting a national search for a one-act written piece to be produced in honor of the 50th Anniversary commemoration of DR. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s historic "Letter from a Birmingham Jail."
The one-act theatrical presentation (play, musical or spoken word) will become the second act of a fully-realized theatrical event that features a first-act dramatic reading of the "Letter to Martin Luther King" by a group of clergymen and DR. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," written during his incarceration in 1963.
Submissions are due no later than September 1, 2012, and the winner will be announced on October 15, 2012. A judging panel, including Keith Cromwell, Lee Sentell and Priscilla Hancock Cooper (Vice President of Institutional Programs at Birmingham Civil Rights Institute), will review each entry to determine the winning piece.
The winning team will be awarded $5,000, along with a round-trip visit to Birmingham, AL, (including accommodations) during the MLK Project's production period (dates TBD). Performance dates are April 11–14, 2013 (Thursday-Saturday, 7:30 PM and Sunday, 2:00 PM).
