Depot Players Presents A SOUTHERN EXPOSURE, Now thru 2/9

By:

While January skies have been overcast around central Alabama, the Wetumpka Depot stage is shining bright with the vibrantly colorful characters of Kelley Kingston Strayer's award winning play A Southern Exposure. Making its Alabama debut, the award winning play will kick off the Wetumpka Depot Player's 33rd season tonight, January 24th. Directed by Depot executive director Kristy Meanor, the hilarious and heartwarming play is a story of love, forgiveness and letting go.

A Southern Exposure author, Kelley Kingston Strayer said the play was inspired by her family. "It does not reveal great truths about the human condition, but only little truths about extraordinary women leading ordinary lives. It is the story of my aunt, Ida, who raised coupon clipping to an art form and believed not sharpening the blades of your lawn mower after every use was a sin. It is the story of my aunt, Mattie, a woman who believed every story ever written in The Enquirer. It is the story of my grandmother, Hattie; the most exasperating, pushy Southern woman ever to wear a girdle. She was the only woman I ever knew who actually liked jury duty, fruit cake and Richard Nixon or who could fake a dizzy spell just to get her way."

"A Southern Exposure follows young Callie Belle Hurt, whose idea of love is so unrealistic it could be lifted from the pages of a romance novel" said director, Kristy Meanor. "Raised by Hattie, her cantankerous, Bible-thumping grandmother with a cast-iron will and her two eccentric, doting aunts who could give The Golden Girls a run for their money, Callie takes a journey to adulthood in this charming comedy." The play is the winner of The Barter Theatre's Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights.

Performances are tonight, January 24-26, January 31-February 2, February 7-9 at 7:30 pm and February 3 at 2 pm. Tickets are just $10 in advance and $12 at the door and online. Tickets may be reserved by calling the Depot at 334-868-1440 or by visiting the theatre's website at www.wetumpkadepot.com. The Depot Theatre is located at 300 S Main Street in the heart of historic downtown Wetumpka.
