Alabama Shakespeare Fest's Performance to Benefit Red Cross Tornado Relief

All proceeds from the Alabama Shakespeare Festival's "Pay What You Can" May 25th showing of the hit show Moonlight and Magnolias will be donated to the Red Cross' tornado relief efforts in Alabama. Show time is at 7:30 p.m.

WSFA 12 News has agreed to partner in the effort by promoting this special event online and on the air.

Tickets are on sale now. The suggested donation for the special showing of Moonlight & Magnolias is $20 but ASF, for the first time, will conduct a "Pay What You Can" opportunity in which any donated amount will be enough to purchase a ticket for the special May 25th show. The regular ticket price is $38.

"All of us at ASF want to help our fellow Alabamians affected by the horrific storms of April 27," said Geoffrey Sherman, producing artistic director, and Mike Vigilant, chief operating officer. "In partnership with WSFA we are committed to helping the Red Cross in their efforts to support our friends and neighbors in need."

Twenty dollar tickets for the May 25th showing may be purchased on line at www.asf.net. "Pay What You Can" tickets may be purchased by calling 800.841.4273 or by visiting the ASF box office during regular office hours. Tickets will also be available at the box office on the night of the performance. ASF is located at 1 Festival Drive in Montgomery's beautiful Blount Cultural Park.

In Moonlight & Magnolias the production of the epic movie Gone With the Wind has stopped, the director has been fired and the screenplay deemed unworkable. A new writer is brought on board to turn what could be a bomb into a blockbuster. Creative forces clash, the press hounds and Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh wait impatiently for their lines in this comedy that Rick Harmon of the Montgomery Advertiser called "a hilarious success."

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is among the largest Shakespeare theatres in the world. Designated as The State Theatre of Alabama, ASF has been located in Montgomery since 1985 when it moved from Anniston as a result of Mr. and Mrs. Wynton M. Blount's gift of a performing arts complex set in the 250-acre Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park. This program/project has been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the arts.
