ASF Completes 09-10 Season with COWGIRLS, Runs 6/11-27

By:

In the tradition of Honky Tonk Angels, Always... Patsy Cline and Beehive the Alabama Shakespeare Festival will complete its 2009-10 season with the summer-fun musical Cowgirls, June 11-27.

Tickets for Cowgirls range from $25-$45 and are available through the ASF box office, on line at www.asf.net or by calling 1.800.841.4273. ASF is located at 1 Festival Drive in Montgomery's beautiful Blount Cultural Park.

In this laugh a minute musical a country-western saloon owner is going to lose her family business to the bank if she doesn't come up with some cash fast. So, a grand re-opening fundraiser is planned starring a hot all-girl country band. But when the band turns out to be more into Chopin than Shania, everyone must find their country roots in 24 hours in order to save the saloon.

Featured songs include Don't Call Me Trailer Trash, Honky Tonk Girl, Kingdom of Country and Saddle Tramp Blues.

The New York Times raved that Cowgirls is "A joyous slapstick hoedown!" Newsday described the musical as a "Fun, honky-tonk romp."

Cowgirls is written by Betsy Howie with music and lyrics by Mary Murfitt. ASF's production is directed by Karen Azenberg who choreographed the ASF hits West Side Story, A Christmas Carol: The Musical and Beehive.

Cast members include Carrie Cimma, Chelsea Lee Costa, Tamra Hayden, Angela Howell, Pearl Rhein and Jessica Wright. Other artistic staff include Mary Ehlinger (Musical Director), Peter Hicks (Set Design), Katrina Cahalan-Wilhite (Costumes), Paul Wonsek (Light Design) and Richelle Thompson (Sound Design). Tanya Searle will serve as Stage Manager.

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is among the largest Shakespeare theatres in the world. Designated as The State Theatre Of Alabama, ASF has been located in Montgomery since 1985 when it moved from Anniston as a result of Mr. and Mrs. Wynton M. Blount's gift of a performing arts complex set in the 250-acre Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park.

This program/project has been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
