The action is located in Spain, in a prison near Seville at the end of the 18th century.

Florestan was thrown in prison by Governor Don Pizarro, whom he had denounced the illegal actions. Leonore, wife of Florestan, is determined to save her husband. Disguised as a boy, under the name of Fidelio, she manages to fit with the jailer Rocco, to gain his trust and free Florestan, aided by the providential arrival of course Minister put an end to the tyrannical arbitrariness of Don Pizarro...
