The firebird is a creature of fable found in Slavic folklore. In his fairy-tale ballet, Stravinsky combines the world of Russian opera with classical dance. Diaghilev called The Firebird (1910) ‘the first ever Russian ballet, because nothing like it has ever existed before’. This project signalledthe start of years of cooperation between Stravinsky and Les Ballets Russes. For Stravinsky,its success marked a genuine breaktrough: overnight, he became a European celebrity. Hewrote the piece for an ’extravagantly large orchestra’, which enabled him to create impressive effects. Prokofiev handled folklore elements very differently. His Sinfonia Concertante for celloand orchestra (1938-52) is a grand concert piece full of virtuoso ostentation, custom-made for Rostropovich. The solo part will be played by a cellist of international renown, Jérôme Pernoo.
