Wanted: A Few Good Men for Morgan State's 'Ragtime'

By:

Do you love musical theater and you were waiting for an incredible opportunity to perform in a Tony winning musical? Have I got a deal for you!  Director Shirley Basfield Dunlap has put out an "all points bulletin" for five white males she needs for the gigantic Morgan State University production of "Ragtime the Musical" which will run Thursday, March 30 (at 11 a.m.), Friday and Saturday nights, March 31 and April 1 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 2 at 3 p.m.

Dunlap is looking for actors to portray Admiral Perry, a policeman, the villain firemen, and to be in the ensemble. Call 443-885-3128.

Rehearsals are  Monday-Thursday nights from 6-10 p.m./>

The massive production has a cast of 50 which includes students from Dumbarton/> Middle School/>/>, Park/> School/>/>, Patapsco High and Center for the Arts, and Towson/> University/>/>. The world-renowned Morgan/> State/>/> chorus and their terrific marching band will be involved.

"Ragtime" is a fascinating musical based on one of America/>/>'s most beloved and admired novels of modern time by E.L. Doctorow. It was proclaimed the "Best Musical of the Year" in 1996 by USA Today.  The historical "fiction" blends the families of Harlem Black, Jewish and European immigrants, and upper middle class White Anglo Saxon Protestants with historical characters such as Henry Ford, Harry Houdini, Emma Goldman, J.P. Morgan, Evelyn Nesbitt, and Booker T. Washington.

The beautiful Tony winning music is by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (composers of the recent Center Stage production "Once on This Island"), book by Terrence McNally, music director is Melvin Miles, Jr. and Choreography is by Timothy David Copney.

"Ragtime" will be presented in the Murphy Fine Arts Center in the Gilliam Concert Hall. Admission is $20, $15 for students and seniors, $10 for MSU students, faculty, and staff.

For tickets, call 443-885-1522 or call Ticketmaster, 410-547-SEAT.
