'Deconstructing the Myth of the Booty' is a production that uses visual art and performance art to explore contemporary perceptions of gender, race, and power amidst the backdrop of the tumultuous life of 19th-century Saartjie Baartman, the company's namesake. The production will be staged at the Strand Theatre Company on January 16 and 17.
The Saartjie Project has garnered international attention for its boundary-stretching stage presentation that explores the mysticism, paradoxes and complexities surrounding the black female body.Saartjie (pronounced Sar-kay) Baartman - was the South African woman paraded around Europe under the showname,"Hottentot Venus". She was caged to show off her large buttocks, dissected upon her death and placed in a museum.Join in this January in Baltimore as we celebrate her humanity and bring her story to life. Founding Producer Jessica Solomon said, "We are extremely excited about the production and are committed to using art as a catalyst of self-expression, self-definition and healing. This is not a performance to miss!"
