Adventure Theatre continues its 2011-2012 60th Anniversary Season with Bud, Not Buddy, February 18 at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival and February 25 at the Intersections Arts Festival based on the Newbery Medal and Coretta Scott King Award Winning book by Christopher Paul Curtis.

Set in Michigan during the 1930s, Bud, Not Buddy tells the story of 10-year-old Bud Caldwell, an orphan on the run from abusive foster homes, and his quest to find his father. Bud's journey sets him on the trail of a jazz band known as Herman E. Calloway and the Dusky Devastators of the Depression. A flier for one of Calloway's shows leads Bud to Grand Rapids and Calloway, the man he believes is his father. Bud gets into all sorts of trouble along the way in this story, filled with uncanny wisdom, which offers a set of hilarious "Rules and Things" designed to help our resilient young hero navigate a world of confusing expectations. Rich with adventure and humor, Bud, Not Buddy is a coming-of-age tale for young and old alike. Approximate running time: 45 minutes.

Directed by Thembi Duncan, this collaboration between Adventure Theatre and the Jazz Academy of Music illustrates the essence of Jazz and its impact on the American dream.

Michael J. Bobbitt, Producing Artistic Director at Adventure Theatre is thrilled to bring such a strong cultural tale to the stage. “Infusing actual jazz music into this show has created such a wonderful opportunity for both the students and actors, bringing to life new cultural theater experiences for increasingly diverse audiences in a really entertaining light.”

Tickets are $8 each and can be purchased through the box office by visiting the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival or the Intersections: A New America Arts Festival websites.
