Student Blogger: Grace Schofield

Hi! My name is Grace Schofield and I am a current BFA Musical Theatre Student at the Dobbins Conservatory at Southeast Missouri State University. I also work at our school’s library and as an usher. I am a second year here at SEMO and I have been involved in multiple productions as a performer, director, and assistant stage manager. I started performing when I was 6 years old and just simply never stopped. I’ve tried to immerse myself in as many aspects of theater as possible. In high school, I also worked at my local theater program as a teacher’s assistant and a performer. I would help teach classes, run rehearsals, and perform in the shows we put on. Most recently, I premiered a short play I wrote in Player's Theatre's Short Play Festival NYC. For fun, I often made vlogs to document my experience in being a part of different shows throughout the semester to be posted on youtube and I loved it. It was fun getting to edit the videos and now, it is really nice to have a sort of time capsule to look back on. I also really enjoy reading, writing short plays and poetry, being around my friends, and I also love gnomes. I am also a christian and my faith is really important to me and it has been really cool to get to share that with others here at my school. I hope to continue to grow and learn more and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

I knew I could do this. I can do this. And I still want to. This experience was incredible. I owe it all to God. I also can’t thank everyone involved in this enough for helping make it happen. I couldn’t have asked for better people or a better place. I wouldn’t change a thing.

I don’t think I’ve ever left an event feeling quite so inspired to work on my writing and wanting to work on new work. This festival was truly inspiring and I left having learned so much from all of these wonderful people.

You were just at school for 9 months and in a routine and now you're home, without having to be somewhere all the time. It can be an adjustment.

Academic integrity is so important, especially in our career field. It prepares us on how to be professional in the future when we get out on our own and start auditioning/booking real, professional, paying jobs.

To be 100% honest, I’m feeling the effects of burnout. There are days where I just want everything to slow down and I just want one day with nothing going on. But I love everything that I’m doing and I don’t want to stop.

Finding a balance of everything going on in just a week, let alone a whole semester can be so challenging and draining. Finding ways/tools to cope with my busy schedule was vital for my physical and mental health.
