Today in 1979, They're Plaing Our Song opened at the Imperial Theatre, where it ran for 1082 performances. With a book by Neil Simon, lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, and music by Marvin Hamlisch, the musical is based on the real-life relationship of Hamlisch and Sager- a wisecracking composer finds a new, offbeat lyricist, but initially the match is not one made in heaven. The two undergo a series of trials and overcome a number of hurdles before finding true love by the final curtain. They're Playing Our Song is essentially a two-character show. Vernon and Sonia are the sole characters on stage; each character has a three-person Greek chorus acting as their inner voices, and there are no big production numbers.

Broadway stars Nick Adams, Ashley Brown, Jessica Rush and Michael James Scott will appear in a special one night only benefit production of Jason Robert Brown's SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD on Monday, March 11 at 7PM at XL Cabaret (512 West 42nd St). Directed by two-time Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun, a portion of the proceeds from the evening will be donated to The Performing Arts Project. Check out a just-released trailer for the concert below!

According to published reports, Broadway veteran and Tony-winner John Kerr passed away on February 2 at 81.

The U.S. premiere of 'Backbeat' just opened at the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre. The dramatic new play with music about the birth of one of the greatest rock 'n' roll bands in history, the Beatles, continues through March 1, 2013. (Preview performances began on January 20.). After the box office failure of Barry Lyndon, Stanley Kubrick decided to embark on a project that might have more commercial appeal. The Shining, Stephen King's biggest critical and commercial success yet, seemed like a perfect vehicle. After an arduous production, Kubrick's film received a wide release in the summer of 1980; the reviews were mixed, but the box office, after a slow start, eventually picked up. End of story? Hardly. In the 30 years since the film's release, a considerable cult of Shining devotees has emerged, fans who claim to have decoded the film's secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies. Rodney Ascher's wry and provocative Room 237 fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick's still-controversial classic.

BIG FISH, a new musical based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and the 2003 Columbia Pictures film written by John August, will open Sunday, October 6, 2013, at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre (250 West 52nd Street). Directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman (Contact, The Producers, The Scottsboro Boys), with music and lyrics by Grammy and Tony Award nominee Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party, The Addams Family), a book by Grammy and BAFTA Award nominee John August (Frankenweenie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Big Fish begins previews on Broadway Thursday, September 5, 2013. MUD is an adventure about two boys, Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and his friend Neckbone (Jacob Lofland), who find a man named Mud (Matthew McConnaughey) hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud describes fantastic scenarios-he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper (Reese Witherspoon), who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn't long until Mud's visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow.

York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Andrew Levine, Executive Director) has announced principal casting for the remaining three musicals in its Winter 2013 Musicals in Mufti Series: Hollywood Pinafore (March 1-3, 2013), Happy Hunting (March 15-17, 2013), and Silk Stockings (March 22-24, 2013) at York Theatre Company at its home in Saint Peter's (Entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue).

Opening on February 7th at the Westchester Broadway Theatre in Elmsford, the 2008 Tony Award winning musical In the Heights takes a local stage for the first time. Directed by Westchester's own John Fanelli and presented by his Standing Ovation Studios, the production features a blend of talent and crew from Broadway and the national tour with regional performers. The Australian Premiere of Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic play Driving Miss Daisy will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at The Playhouse, QPAC, Brisbane. The production stars two of the world's greatest living actors- five-time Tony Award and three-time Academy Award nominee Angela Lansbury and two-time Tony Award winner and Academy Award winner James Earl Jones, alongside four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines.
