The Frist Center for the Visual Arts' 2012 exhibition schedule offers a wide variety of exhibitions in the Center's Ingram Gallery. These include masterpieces of American art from the famed Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.; an exhibition combining quilts from Gee's Bend, Ala., and the monumental assemblages of Alabama native Thornton Dial; works on paper from self- taught artist Bill Traylor, also from Alabama; and a major Frist-organized retrospective of the work of internationally acclaimed photographer, Carrie Mae Weems.

The PDC Playwright Residency Showcase at Plays & Players will take place on August 20th from 6-9 PM at Plays & Players (1714 Delancey Place, Philadelphia PA). The event will feature Joy Cutler, Quinn Eli, and Greg Romero. Residency program developed and produced by Daniel Student, Plays & Players Producing Artistic Director and Wally Zialcita, PDC Executive Director.

The Museum of Modern Art recognizes the achievements of Roman Polanski with a complete retrospective of the filmmaker's works, September 7-30, 2011, in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters. Over the course of a half century, Polanski has become widely recognized as one of the premier international filmmakers, directing films in Poland, England, the U.S., Italy, and France and working with distinguished actors such as Jack Nicholson, Adrien Brody, Catherine Deneuve, Mia Farrow, Ben Kingsley, and Nastassja Kinski.

Fans of the hit SHOWTIME comedy series THE BIG C can catch up on the season with a special Sunday marathon this weekend. All seven episodes of the new season will air back-to-back beginning at 2:30 PM (ET/PT), Sunday, August 14th on SHOWTIME.

Moving into the second season in its expanded campus, Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater has updated the culinary options available to patrons in the venue. The upper lobby-level dining area has become Catwalk Café. This casual self-service café, along with its adjoining bar and the main lobby-level concessions, will continue to be operated by Ridgewells Catering, who ran the café launched during the inaugural season in the Mead Center: Next Stage Café by José Andrés.

Stepping momentarily away from the rhythm secion of OC surf-punk bashers the Moonhearts with his debut solo LP, Mikal Cronin bringings his ridiculously catchy tracks to the Bowery Ballroom on September 29 on tour with long-time friend and collaborator Ty Segall. With Ty producing and with guests like Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer, Mikal Cronin has emerged with a fully realized, cohesive and beautiful LP.

Single tickets for First Stage's 25th anniversary season of theater experiences for young people and families are on sale Monday, August 22, 2011. The season kicks off with SEUSSICALTM - back by popular demand! First Stage's original production of SEUSSICALTM hit the stage in 2006, playing to sold-out audiences and critical acclaim. Other highlights of the season include the world premiere of DON'T TELL ME I CAN'T FLY, an original play by Y York, inspired by the life and art of Milwaukee collage artist Della Wells, and this year's upbeat, hilarious holiday show JUNIE B. The Brooklyn Museum will commemorate the tenth anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, with an installation, Ten Years Later: Ground Zero Remembered, the focal point of which will be a work in the late Michael Richards's Tuskegee Airmen Series (1997) and Christoph Draeger's photographic jigsaw puzzle WTC, September 17 (2003). The works will be displayed alongside two 2002 comment books filled with text and images by visitors who viewed images documenting 9/11 displayed on the first anniversary of the tragic events.

Comedian and actor Gabriel Iglesias will debut his Stand Up Revolution Tour at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino during Mexican Independence Day Weekend September 15 - 18. Shows on Thursday, Sept. 15, Friday, Sept. 16 and Sunday, Sept. 18 are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. The Saturday, Sept. 17 performance will begin at 10 p.m.

The Sunshine Workshop announced today the winners of the 'Broadway Bound' International Songwriting Contest: Patty Shukla, Emily Whitcomb, Gianvita Bonaduce and Ron Viens. Scheduled for release in fall of 2012, the musical is be based on the children's book, 'The Thanksgiving Coat,' written by Elizabeth Hoadley and illustrated by 5-Year Old Kailee of The Sunshine Workshop.

Filming has begun in Toronto on the 12-part action series TRANSPORTER, starring Chris Vance ('Burn Notice,' 'Prison Break') in the title role. Shooting through this November, the series will debut on CINEMAX in 2012.

The Hollywood Bowl proudly presents Joni's Jazz, a concert featuring special guests performing works from the jazz-based recordings of the iconic singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell.* Artists include Herbie Hancock, Kurt Elling, Glen Hansard, Aimee Mann, Chaka Khan, Wayne Shorter and Cassandra Wilson. Spottiswoode & His Enemies have released their first song collection since the 2008 double release that marked their tenth anniversary. Wild Goosechase Expedition is the band's most shamelessly eclectic recording since their very first eponymous CD over a decade ago. It's a mad scramble of songs that mirrors the madness of life on the road. 'It's our Magical Mystery Tour,' says Spott. 'As a bandleader, I often feel like a general leading his troops on one doomed tour after another. This is a surreal trip through a warring world.'

Anyone connected to, or familiar with, 'country' music has probably heard the name Stanley. Probably lots of folks have been exposed to the Stanley name, especially the Stanley Brothers, preservationists of mountain music, or as they liked to call it, 'old timey country.' The brothers are being inducted into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame this year. Ralph Stanley, the surviving Stanley Brother, was a huge hit in the movie 'O Brother Where Art Thou.' His brother Carter, the smooth vocalist and songwriter for the duo, passed away in 1966 from cirrhosis of the liver. He was only 41 years old. Ralph has carried on the musical tradition of the Stanley Brothers, mostly with his band the Clinch Mountain Boys. This 'tradition' is vitally important to fans of country music, when it was actually 'country.' Today, most country music leans heavily on rock-and-roll, and even rap, in an attempt to attract a young audience. But in the doing, perhaps major labels have tossed the baby out with the bath water, when it comes to actually projecting a true 'country' image in the music they produce.'
