There have been many celebrations around Her Magesty's Theatre lately. On 7 March, the Billy Elliot company marked their 500th performance in Australia. 12 March also saw another milestone passed: the company's 100th performance at Her Majesty's Theatre.

They have now sold over 200,000 tickets to Billy Elliot at HMT. It's wonderful that Melbourne audiences have loved the show so much to make it so successful. And, as we've already mentioned, the show is over halfway through the season - so if you haven't already seen it, make sure you don't miss out!

Based on the film of the same name, Billy Elliot is the gritty, funny and heart-warming tale of a young boy with a dream, and a celebration of his triumph against the odds. Set against the historic British miners' strike of 1984-85, the story follows Billy's journey as a boy in a small mining town who, after stumbling across a ballet class on his way to boxing lessons, realises that his future lies not in the boxing ring, but on stage as a dancer.

Directed by Stephen Daldry, with book and lyrics by Lee Hall, Billy Elliot was developed for the stage by the same multi-award winning creative team responsible for the film. The score was composed by music legend, Elton John.
