ZACH Theatre launches the new season of its family show series with a bilingual play celebrating the bonds of family and friendship. Salt is a boy whose family has a secret: his grandfather cannot read or write. When Salt befriends Pepper, her love of books sparks his interest in the world of words. Then, a mysterious box of postcards sheds light on Salt's family.

"Salt and Pepper is an extremely well written and moving play that deals with issues of illiteracy and the affect it has on families and communities," says Nat Miller, Education Director for ZACH Theatre. "The play is written by José Cruz González, who is one of the leading Latino playwrights in the United States. We will have 4,000 students see this production, and more than 70% will be from low-income schools, who will be seeing the play at a reduced price or no price at all. This is our second year to offer bilingual programming for families and schools, and we are excited to tell stories that represent the communities and children who attend our theatre."

Directed by Jessica Hutchinson, the cast features Michael Quinlara as "Salt," Abigal Vela as "Pepper," Ben Bazan as "Andy," Karen Alvarado as "Hannah," and Rodney Garza as "Grandpa." The production features scenic design by Rachel Bennick, costume design by Chin Hua Yeh, lighting design by Dawn Wittke, sound design by Blake Addyson, and props design by Justin Cox.

Salt and Pepper is staged in partnership with the University of Texas Department of Theatre and Dance. ZACH's imaginative shows for children are perfect for ages 3 and up (age varies depending on show) and are performed by talented, professional actors-often performers from ZACH Theatre's mainstage productions.

The show runs today, Sept. 27- Nov. 2, 2013, with performances set for Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with added performances on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 20 at 4:30 p.m.To order tickets call 512-476-0541 ext. 1 or visit www.zachtheatre.org.
