The Atlanta Fringe Festival Returns To Little Five Points
The Atlanta Fringe Festival is thrilled to return for their 6th annual festival, taking place June 6 - 10, 2018. This year's festival will feature 20 performing arts groups - dancers, comedians, storytellers, puppeteers, and more - putting up live shows across five venues in and around Little Five Points throughout four jam-packed days. Each group performs four times each for a total of 80 performances over four days!
"We're so excited to be back, and to have so many of our favorite artists from years past returning," says Executive Director Diana Brown. "Some of these artists are back for their third or fourth festival, with a bunch of newcomers and veterans of other festivals joining in. It really shows that the word is out that this festival takes care of its artists, and our audiences have proven to be receptive to such exciting new work."
As in years past, the 2018 festival boasts live performances from across the theatrical spectrum, from family-friendly puppet shows to avant garde dance troupes and campy drag showcases. This year's festival will also boast plenty of offerings for fans of live storytelling, with adventurous solo performers bringing intimate first-person confessionals, historical re-enactments, stand-up comedy, and more. Per the festival's tradition, the 20 productions were selected via random, unjuried lottery -- literally pulled out of a hat -- from a pool of 70 submissions.
This year's festival will take place in traditional and converted performing spaces in and around Little Five Points, including 7 Stages, the Highland Inn Ballroom, The Marianna at Wrecking Bar Brewpub, and the International Montessori Academy.
Free theatre for the ears: In addition to the live performances, the Atlanta Fringe will once again feature free online audio content: Fringe Audio. The only podcasting network of its kind on the fringe circuit, Fringe Audio will feature pieces of storytelling and radio theatre, most of them world premieres, submitted by local and national artists. The recordings will be available for streaming via AtlantaFringe.org from Memorial Day (May 28) through June 17 and will be completely free.
Festival artists will be eligible for cash prizes for the favorite shows as selected by the audience, staff and a panel of judges from the Atlanta arts community. These include a $500 Critics' Choice Award, a $200 Producer's Choice Award (chosen by the Fringe staff) and two $150 Audience Choice Awards for audience picks in the categories of solo/small cast and ensemble performances. Audience members will be able to cast their vote online at atlantafringe.org/vote any time during the festival. The Fringe Audio recording with the most "likes" on the online platform will win $100.
Free events for the general public: In addition to the festival performances the 2018 Atlanta Fringe will feature plenty of auxiliary events that are completely free to attend. It all kicks off with a free preview at 7 Stages on Wednesday June 6 that will feature 3-minute performances from every single artist in the festival, as well as door prizes and other giveaways. Every night of the festival will also include "Hot Spot" afterparties/networking opportunities at local bars including The Albert, Cameli's Pizza, and Sweet Auburn BBQ. The Festival will wrap up on Sunday June 10 with a closing night party and award ceremony at the Highland Ballroom.
