Newnan Theatre Company Presents NOVEMBER, Now thru 11/18

By:

Newnan Theatre Company is presenting the Atlanta area premiere of David Mamet's "November" from (appropriately) tonight, November 8 through November 18. NTC's premiere will take place just two weeks later than the Los Angeles premiere at the Mark Taper Forum, starring Ed Bagley Jr. and Felicity Huffman.

Whether your choice in the 2012 presidential election won or lost, you'll enjoy this sharp-witted farce. An inside look into the under belly of life in the Oval Office, the play contains mature content that some may find a little too much like real life. The play is a gleeful cornucopia of corruption and political incorrectness full of shady back room schemes.

President Charles Smith (played by NTC veteran performer Tony Daniel) is the most corrupt and inept buffoon to occupy the White House and desperately wants to be re-elected, but his approval ratings are "lower than Ghandi's chloresterol." One week before the election, the Oval Office becomes Grand Central Station for political third rails: civil marriages, lesbians, campaign contributions, lobbies, assassins and a couple of literal turkeys.

"November" premiered on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on January 17, 2008. Laurie Metcalf received a Tony Award nomination as Best Featured Actress in a Play for her portrayal of lesbian speech writer Clarice Bernistein. Nathan Lane played the Commander-In-Chief for the Broadway run.

Pamela DeRitis steps into the sensible shoes of Bernistein at NTC. Rounding out the cast at Newnan Theatre Company are Chris Dixon as the president's right hand man Archer Brown, Lamar Payne as a representative from the national association of turkey and turkey manufacturers, and Jeff Allen as Chief Dwight Grackle of the Mic Mac nation. NTC's Artistic Director, Paul Conroy, directs this production.

David Mamet won a Pulitzer Prize for his drama "Glengarry Glen Ross" in 1992. His first screenplay was "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (adapted from the novel by James Cain). Other critically acclaimed screenplays include "The Verdict" (1982), "The Untouchables" (1987), and "Wag the Dog" (1998).

A revival of "Glengary Glen Ross" opens on Broadway in a few weeks starring Al Pacino and soon after a new work by Mamet, "The Anarchist," will begin a run starring Patti LuPone and Deborah Winger.
