Nationally-Acclaimed Veterans Portrait Project Coming To The Woodruff Arts Center

The nationally-acclaimed Veterans Portrait Project will open as a special exhibition at Atlanta's Woodruff Arts Center on Veterans Day, November 11, 2017.

The Woodruff Arts Center, which includes the ALLIANCE THEATRE, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and High Museum of Art, maintains a special commitment to veterans and military families and with support from The Home Depot Foundation is bringing this renowned photography collection to Georgia.

Since 2008, wounded veteran and combat photographer Stacy Pearsall has traveled the country to capture the spirit of America's veterans. She has created exceptionally personal portraits of more than 6,000 veterans who've served during every conflict since World War II.

"The Home Depot Foundation allows The Woodruff Arts Center to provide veterans and military families access to exhibitions and performances at no cost," explained Alvin Townley, director of corporate philanthropy and veterans programs at The Woodruff Arts Center. "Partnering with The Home Depot Foundation and Stacy Pearsall to bring the Veterans Portrait Project to Georgia offers one more way to honor and serve this special population. Hosting the exhibition here at The Woodruff Arts Center allows everyone to be inspired by these men and women and Stacy's special ability to capture their spirit."

"The Veterans Portrait Project began as an emotionally cathartic, physically healing tool," explains Stacy, who suffered injuries from two IED explosions. "I'd committed my life to my country and when I could no longer serve in uniform, the VPP became an extension of my service. My new mission is to share the unique stories of military veterans and honor their service in a unique, creative way so their contributions to American military history are never lost."

Forty-four of Pearsall's framed portraits will hang in The Woodruff Arts Center's Beauchamp C. Carr Gallery (1280 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA, 30309) from November 17, 2017, through January 15, 2018. Digital images of hundreds of veterans will enhance and broaden the exhibition experience.
