Some called him the lighting guy, Dad's called him family, everyone knows him as a Legend. In honor of the memory of Conan Santamaria, Dad's Garage announces a call for applications for the "Legend of Conan Lighting Scholarship." This award will give an emerging lighting designer the chance to hone their craft on the Dad's Garage stage and kickstart a creative career in lighting design.

The award period will begin in Summer 2018. The recipient will receive a three-month stipend during which time they will work with the Dad's team on our scripted plays, improv shows, and DGTV videos.

The youngest of three brothers raised by a loving single mom, Conan Sanatamaria grew up in Marietta, Georgia. He loved soccer, lacrosse, and as a musician won a National Championship with the Lassiter High School marching band. After obtaining a lighting degree at Georgia College and State University he heard the ATL calling as the Hollywood boon gripped the city. Conan worked his way from PA to Lighting Tech in the studios of Turner Broadcasting. From NBA TV to Turner Classic Movies, Conan always brought his laid-back style and persistent work ethic. While Josh blossomed at Turner, he rooted himself at Dad's Garage and fell in love with theatre all over again. Conan was also a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda, thus giving him the name "Legend."

Conan died February 10, 2018 at the age of 32 after a year-long battle with lung cancer. In Conan's final year, every day he was healthy he would make his way back to Dad's to design with lights. Conan never regarded it as work-lighting was his love.

To honor Conan and his passion, Dad's Garage wants to support an emerging designer in the work they love to do so that they may truly live every day.

Next time you're at Dad's look up into the lights-Conan's Legend burns bright.
