Aurora Theatre Begins a New Cutting-Edge Laboratory Series with boom

By: Sep. 09, 2009

Aurora Theatre is proud to announce the creation of a brand new series of plays made possible through the generous support of an inspired sponsor, Georgia Gwinnet College (GGC). At a time when many organizations are making the difficult decision to cut programming, Aurora is thrilled to be in the position to add this important series that will give voIce To playwrights representing our current generation of artists. The GGC Lab Series will feature contemporary works fueled by innovation, creativity and inspiration. GGC Lab performances will be held in the Gwinnett Federal Credit Union Studio, giving audiences an up-close view of thought provoking experimental plays that will resonate with our next generation of theatre goers. This season will include a two-play series with a March production planned.

The GGC Lab Series inaugural production is boom by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb. Atlanta audiences may remember his dark comedy, Colorado, produced by Dad's Garage Theatre Company. boom is a doomsday comedy that cleverly addresses issues like the apocalypse, sexuality and even evolution. The characters in boom include, Jules, a grad student who entices Jo, a sexy co-ed, through a Craigslist ad, to his subterranean lab. Enter a strange woman, Barbara, pulling levers and playing timpani from her post high atop the action. This sexy, shocking, irreverent comedy will have the audience exploding in laughter. The play is directed by Joe Gfaller, who also helmed two hit shows at Aurora Theatre (Dial M for Murder, Dracula). The show features three great Atlanta talents: Shelly McCook (Glorious!), Eve Krueger and Topher Payne.

"I have always enjoyed Theatre in the Square's Alley Stage. I have seen a number of their plays and even had the opportunity to be in one (Jesus Hopped the A Train)," explains Aurora Theatre Artistic Director Anthony Rodriguez. "For years, they produced many critically acclaimed regional premieres that provided a voIce To contemporary playwrights. We knew we wanted to emulate their cutting-edge series, but we needed to find the funding. President Dan Kaufman at GGC is a great community partner who was looking for ways to provide arts experiences for his students and the formation of this series is proof of that commitment."
