Artist Reception: NWUUC Art Gallery Celebrates Civil Rights Era, 2/7
Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation's Art Gallery celebrates our country's African-American heritage and civil rights history with the work of painter Bruce Johnson and members of the Ebony Stitchers Quilt Guild. An artist reception will be held February 7, 2013, between 4:00 and 7:00 pm at NWUUC.
During the months of January and February the art exhibition in the Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation's Art Gallery will highlight our country's African-American heritage and history. Painter Bruce Johnson and members of the Ebony Stitcher's Quilt Guild will exhibit dramatic artistic creations that encourage reflection on this theme. The congregation is located at 1025 Mount Vernon Highway N.W., Sandy Springs, GA 30327.
Bruce Johnson is a full-time Atlanta artist whose current work focuses on the human and personal connectedness of members of the civil rights movement of the mid-1950s. His entries include several larger-than-life mixed media recreations of photographs (mug shots) of civil rights advocates taken after their arrests during the Montgomery Alabama Bus Boycott. A powerful portrait of slain civil rights activist Medgar Evers and a large and gripping portrait of President Barack Obama are also in the exhibition.
The Ebony Stitcher's Quilt Guild is the premier metro Atlanta guild for quilters of color. Eight guild members, all skilled fiber artists and quilters, are exhibiting 16 pieces of fabric art with African-American themes. African fabrics and themes are also emphasized. The Guild holds several exhibitions throughout the year. A major exhibition each summer at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center in DeKalb County is part of the National Black Arts Festival. The Art Gallery at the Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation is privileged to present their work.
This event is free and open to the public.
