UPDATE: Larry David Play Confirmed; Title, Director, Opening Date Revealed!

As BWW reported earlier this week, SEINFELD creator Larry David has written a new play in which he will make his Broadway debut this winter. Tony winning producer Scott Rudin will produce. Contrary to earlier reports, David's 'Seinfeld' collaborator Jerry Seinfeld will not be involved in the project.

Mr. David spoke by telephone to the New York Times yesterday and revealed that the play, to be titled 'Fish In the Dark,' was a comedy made up of approximately 15 characters. (previous reports that the play would be titled 'Shiva' proved false.) The story's inspiration was the death of a friend's father and thus would center on a family dealing with a recent death. He joked that he would be portraying "somebody very similar to Larry David - it might even be Larry David with a different name."

The comedian is best known for his semi fictionalized portrayal of himself on the hit HBO comedy "Curb Your Enthusiasm," in which he appeared for one episode in a condensed version of "The Producers." In yesterday's interview, he shared his thoughts on becoming both a playwright and a Broadway actor in one fell swoop. "I'll be without anything that I've become used to," he explained. "I haven't been in a play since the eighth grade, when I did 'Charley's Aunt.' I seem to remember wearing a dress. That's it. And I'm not even really an actor. But I'm still sleeping at night, and I hope that continues."

At first, David admits he had no intention of acting in the play, which he wrote last summer. It was not until Broadway producer Scott Rudin became involved in the project that he was encouraged to tread the boards. "I didn't really want to do it, but, I mean, do you know Scott? He's a very persuasive fellow, and I give him a lot of credit for that," he said joking, "I had been prepared to just go to some rehearsals as the writer, watch quietly, say a few words, then go to a few performances and pace around the back of the theater, give some notes, pace some more. But now this. Something has gone awry."

The play, to be directed by Tony winner Anna D. Shapiro, will play at one of New York's Shubert theaters with an opening date of March 5th. At the current time, David says he does not want to give out any additional details and shared that no casting decisions have been made at this time. He also revealed that he would not rule out taking on another season of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' however if he were to do it, "this play would push that schedule back."
