Tsidii Le Loka to perform at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center at Borough of Manhattan Community College (199 Chambers Street) on May 1st and 2nd at 8PM. Tsidii will perform a concert entitled To the Rising Sun featuring the music of Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, and Odetta.
Tsidii Le Loka is most well-known for originating the role of "Rafiki" in The Lion King on Broadway. She has been nominated for a TONY and has won several other awards including a Drama Desk and the prestigious Ivor Novella Award. She began her career as a member of the top South African trio, SHADII. Tsidii has performed with some of the best artists on the world stage including: Sting, Max Roach, Madonna, Elton John, Miriam Makeba, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Her television credits include Rose Red, Diary of Ellen Rimbauer, and Law and Order.
In To the Rising Sun, Tsidii will plumb the depths of the musical icons - Nina Simone, Mariam Makeba, and Odetta Holmes. Nina Simone composed over 500 songs and recorded over 50 albums. Miriam Makeba is credited with bringing the rhythmic and spiritual sounds of Africa to the West. Odetta Holmes who is best known as Odetta distinguished herself early on as a folk music giant and during her lifetime influenced many young artists of today.
When Tsidii was asked why these women to base a show around, she responded by saying that "these women were all activists and used their music as a platform to speak out during the civil rights movement and the apartheid struggle. The music allows us to revisit the message of the human potential for love, understanding, and a sense of hope."
